paint stripper - radiator

I want to strip the paint from a cast radiator. There isn't enough space to get tools in there so thinking about using paint stripper. I have a screwfix on the corner, is their own brand stripper any good or is nitromors worth the extra cost?

i don't need one of the large tins so £50 is a bit much but i think aldi have smaller nitromors for about a £8 each.

There was a thread on here in the last couple of days about how some of the branded strippers have been health and safety'd and no longer work so well

The person there was using brake fluid instead but there were several other suggestions, I will try and find it

Since its cast iron? a propane roofers torch should do the job other than gritblasting.

If you can't get tools in there how ya going to remove the paintstripper flakey paint and excess paintstripper?

I can't get my wire wheels in but could likely get a scraper in. No heat gun here as its lent out.

Save your money Nitromors is no longer effective since it was reformulated, I have tried it and found it useless.

Look for a paint stripper that contains Dichloromethane, it's the only stuff that works and was once found in Nitromors. Once applied and paint has softened use a jet wash to get to all the hard to reach areas

There was a thread on here ages back about someone buying nitromores and then the extra 'stuff' off ebay, mixing them together, and making an effective stripper once again.

I dont know how the joints are done on cast rads - if there are gaskets or not. If there are, you would need to be careful as to using a torch.

We have one in our bathroom. I used a wire wheel on a grinder, and figured that what i couldnt get the wheel to, was unliky to be that visible anyhow.

I then sprayed it with water based undercoat and gloss (both just standard house paints - probably from aldi if truth be known!).

Ive not actually got it hot yet, but it certainly looks fine.

Well I've got some of the cheap stuff from screwfix, worth a shot. First coat on, another in an hour.

Just go to a proper industrial paint supplier where the 'proper' stuff is readily available - I got some for my tractor - took the lid off the tin and the paint just jumped off!

Youll still need access with a stripper, unless its so good you can just rinse off the whole lot (which is unlikely)

If you cant get off the part-stripped paint, then painting over is going to give a worse job than if you had never put stripper on it.
In fact, the more i think about it, the more i figure paint stripper may just make your life harder : (

Soon after they dropped dichloromethane, the logo representing approval by the Guild of Master Craftsmen no longer appeard on the tin,musta been a big drop in sales of the nitromors.

One more point -

At least on the radiator here, the cast is far from smooth. So, depending on the finish youre after, you might like to leave some of the layers in place, as they will probably be smoother than the metal itself!
