painting a trailer

have a trailer with the paint in a similar condition to this at home, whats the best way to go about painting something like this, I don't have a sand blaster btw

Im thinking powerwash with water at 2500psi to know off dirt and any loose paint

then wire wheel on the angle grinder to knock off the rust

then primer paint
then 2 coats of paint


The trailer will spend a good proportion of its time outside so need to get it painted well, Im 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and we have the salty sea air to contend with, and only want to do the job once

all help/tips on how to get the paint to stick a bit better appreciated

Is painting with a spray gun and compressor any advantage over painting with a brush ?

Hi,

I would say that once you have a sound clean abraded base to work to you want something pretty decent on the thing.

Normally when painting anything within a few miles of the Sea we would class that as being in a C4 Environment. This means it is Coastal but not likely to get covered in Sea Water on a regular basis.

This would normally mean we would suggest the following paint system (Although others are available)...

Coat 1 - PPG SigmaCover 280 2K Epoxy Primer
Coat 2 - PPG SigmaCover 456 2K Epoxy Coating
Coat 3 - PPG SigmaDur 520 2K Polyurethane Gloss Topcoat

This should give you at least 10 years to 1st maintenance.

Now these products are all for spray application and being 2K you would need to wear suitable Air Fed Mask.

If you didn't want to go to this kind of expense then basically the more paint thickness the better when it comes to these kind of environments.

To cut a long story short, yes you are right 2 coats of Primer and a good quality Topcoat

Yes. Jotun Jotamastic 80 epoxy primer then follow by Jotun Hardtop CA epoxy topcoat. Shepherd Marine sell both.

say I wet blasted the steel with a pressure washer @2800psi rather than the wire wheel, whats the best way to remove the phosphoric rust after the wet blasting

the steel must be 110% dry before applying any primer topcoat ?

What about asking a local firm who strip and repaint HGV trailer ready for Plating Test ?
No idea of costs but "if you don't ask" etc ?
