The rear near side 'hose guard' on my 1995 Project 8 JCB 3CX was mangled when I got it and I've never been able to source a replacement. So some time ago I 'plastic welded' and ironed flat the mangled remains to give me the profile to replicate it, but I could only find black 2 mm HDPE sheet. I ordered some but the old guard and the new sheet have been kicking about in my workshops for at least 6 months.
It installs on a curve, being pulled into shape by four bolts, and the plastic welded one isn't strong enough to survive being curved to fit - I've been dragging my heels in the hope of finding an original or at least some Yellow MDPE 2 mm sheet. Neither of these thing have occurred so today, fed up with tripping over the bits, I cut out the new one.
The 'installed' picture is of the offside which is still intact.
Now if it was steel I'd not hesitate to paint it RAL1007 JCB Yellow using the ancient tin that I have of gloss quick drying enamel, which despite it's antiquity (2016) is still perfectly usable having recently painted the radiator grille and bonnet.
BUT - this is HDPE plastic - is painting it doomed to failure - should I swallow my pride and put it on black - or do I stand any chance that this paint will bond. Can I help it with surface preparation - sand blasting for instance ?
. . advice please
