I have started to rebuild my 1996 Defender 90 and am starting to think about painting it. I've done a bit of spraying before and am pretty confident with techniques but haven't a clue about what paint / primer etc I need. I've spent £4500 so far on it and don't want it to look like most Landrovers end up looking, I'm after a factory finish.
I have a 3hp 150litre compressor, and a couple of guns - 2x Devilbiss CGA's - these are quite old, A BinksBullows 222 and a Sealey copy of Devilbiss JGA gun. Are any of these suitable for spraying 2 pack to a quality finish?
The compresser has no regulator or filters on it at the moment, obviously I need to sort this - what do I need to be looking at getting for it before spraying?
As far as the paintwork is concerned almost all the panels are brand new;
One rear wing is bare alloy, the new back door is in grey primer, the new front doors are black "electrocoated" primer, as are the new front wings, other rear wing and new bulkhead.
The bonnet and hardtop are the original factory paintwork. Do I etch prime the bare alloy panel, and d/a sand the original paintwork. Presumably the black electropaint primer can be painted directly to after a light prep with the d/a??
My intention is to spray all the bodywork off the vehicle, assemble it then give it another coat with laquer - is this the right way to go about it?
What colourcoat/ laquer should I use, I was told singlepack colourcoat and the 2pack laquer would be the way to go. Money is not really a problem as I'm intending to get 40years out of it when it's done!
Sorry for all the questions!!!
Thanks
