I am attempting to restore a 40 series landcruiser troop carrier with very little experience and would love some advice. I am not to concerned with the finish being perfect as it will be a practical daily driver and not a show car but i do want it to look decent and most importantly I want to eradicate rust for as long as possible. I have purchased a 12cfm compressor and a gravity fed gun and a 190 amp mig and as a result I am now pretty poor and hoping not to spend a fortune. My main dilemma currently is deciding whether to take it back to bare metal and then paint it with a lacquer system, which seems like it will be a lot of work, or just to paint it with enamel (i understand the original paint in enamel so i cant paint over the original paint with a lacquer?)
Also just learning to weld (this site has been very helpful) and am wondering if there is any disadvantage to overlapping patches from behind and then filling it as opposed to trying to cut out a bit exactly the right size and butt weld it. Hope all that makes sense and your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
