I was having a discussion today with @Tinbasherdan . He was commenting on my fetish for drill bits while I was trying to find a 7.6mm drill and into the conversation the subject of Parabolic Drills came up. It has come as a surprise to me to learn that not everybody is as fascinated with drills as I am!
I have been interested in deep hole drilling for some time now and I have quite a number of tools at my disposal in order to drill clean deep holes. I suppose the first thing is to clarify what I mean be "deep holes". Well in the scheme of things a deep hole isn't actually that deep and they are calculated as multiples of diameter a hole 4x diameter for example a 10mm diameter hole is fine up to 40mm so 4 times the diameter so 10 x 4 = 40mm A regular jobber drill is fine for this and actually even up to 8 times the diameter so 80mm deep using a 10mm diameter drill or 2" with a quarter inch drill. But 8X dia. is the absolute max (yes, I know, we have all done more but where exactly did the hole come out and what was the surface finish like? At 8x Dia and more you should really be using Parabolic Drills.
These drills have a much faster twist in the flutes and the web is 25 to 50% bigger than a conventional drill, it clears chips faster and leaves a nicer finish, after 20x diameter you will need to be casting spells and doing a few incantations as this depth is really a black art, some people are good at it and some people not so much. Luck and experience start to play their part.
