i find it hard to get a peeler on the pickhill bantam, i only get the slag to crack more than lift, is it bad welding or just the fact it is an ac set. i always get the slag to peel and fall off in vertical up tho

don't think so i weld with 6013 i don't know if they can peel but have never gotten one even though they are great looking welds

I have never had a peeler. Have had it just fall off when brushed away.

A lot has to do with the rod/flux. Some of mine the slag is hard as stone and crumbles into small pieces. The better rods the slag stays in large pieces.

I do see the slag comes off easier on DC.

I've had one or two peelers with a basic AC buzzbox. Only on thick material and at high current settings. Can't remember what rods though, but nothing fancy.

You should be able to get a peeler with a 6013. It's down to correct current and travel speed. Also happens more often on cool material, but that's not a recommendation.
Some makes will have more peelable slag than others, so it's as likely to be that as anything else. The ac thing shouldn't make any difference.

If the slag is cracking and droping away your doing everything right, I suspect a slightly diffrent travel speed would make them peal.....

When I was trying to learn arc welding I went through a phase when 3 or 4 out of 5 beads would peel (just running a bead on a piece of old scrap for 9 or 10 rods every Sunday morning)
Having done my evening classes and with my welding (for me) much improved I've not had a peeler since

does a 'peeler' matter? you just want a good weld, how the slag is makes no difference.....

I got my first proper "peeler" today welding two pieces of plate steel together... 10mm plate using a 4mm 6013 rod, no idea how I achieved it.

tanx lads :P jess isnt steel expensive :O nevr did i think it was tat bad 80 feet of 8by4 guirder beam and 14 16foot corrugated sheets 1200euro, nt to mention cleats and rods and watnot else

Thanks Simon, it was on 2 pieces of rusty steel too! It was the first time I've welded in over a month.

Why thank you. I was just "farting" around with two old pieces of scrap plate and wasn't really bothering with the results, but low-and-behold I got a peeler.
