I've been working on another project lately. Christmas isn't that far away and just for a change I decided I would make something for my wife. Somewhere where I was working at in the past 12 months I saw a miniature Penny Farthing hanging on a wall as a decoration and decided to make one. (don't ask me why ................ I just decided to make one !) I bought some 8mm rod and some 6mm rod. I really wanted some 12mm rod to make the rims out of but that is fairly hard to bend, so I settled on 8mm as I don't have any fancy bending machinery and 8mm is easier to bend. The front wheel is 660mm diameter and the rear is 220mm . I cut a couple of pine board / MDF discs to the sizes and proceeded to bend the steel to fit the templates. Well, between that and a RSJ I use as an anvil and a hammer I managed to get 2 circles of near perfect dimensions. I bought a couple of 5mm thick discs to use as hubs and cut the spokes from the 6 mm rod all exactly the same length.
So now I have the 2 wheels finished and will next start with the front forks and frame with a seat outline, handlebars and pedals.
I know I should have taken some photos as I progressed through the job, but I didn't, so I will post a pic or two when I have it finished. I am presuming this artwork will be hung on the side of the shed or on the fence come Christmas. Or maybe it will get wrapped around my neck !!!
