Perkins V8

im looking for info on the perkins V8, i did see a thread about a tractor conversion and there were or two knowledgeable folk who posted about the engine but i cant find that thread now

i am planning on fitting a perkins V8 that i removed from a fire engine that i stripped into my zil 131 truck in the summer so im just collecting info/bits now so i will be ready when the sunny weather gets here

the info im after is whether the engine sump is reversible, at the moment it will collide with the front diff, if i could reverse it so the low part was at the back i could send the engine down much lower

l only think it might be reversible because 1 it looks square and two if i was designing and engine for multiple applications it would seem a sensible thing to do
but thats me just guessing

i would like the low part at the back, or is there another sump of an agricultural or marine application ?

Many years ago I sliced the flange off a crossflow sump, spun the sump bowl 180* and welded it back onto the flange to move the bowl from the front to the back. Inside the only thing I had to do was rotate the s-shaped oil pickup pipe to match.
In my case it would have been easier to fit a new sump & oil pickup pipe but the cut & shut sump worked fine

i dont , i havent opened it up yet, im hoping there is a pick pipe that i can modify and the sump bolts back on back to front, but im probably dreaming lol

Some sumps are reversible. Early crossflows were as they were symmetrical. Later ones got a "bulge" at one end so could only be fitted one way I think they made the front & rear crank seals different sizes at the same time just to make sure you couldn't swap them Be lucky !

I looked at fitting a cross flow out of my Cortina GT into a Capri years ago by swapping the sump, I found there was nowhere to fit the dipstick, the blocks were slightly different.

It’s a long time since I worked on one so can’t help with the sump question. Do you know which version it is as I think they did four, all in turbo and non-turbo versions. The 510 was difficult to make oil-tight though the 540 was much better, I never worked on the later larger 640 ones. They were prone to wearing out pistons and liners, though as yours is ex-fire engine it’s probably OK, though pay attention to the valve clearances as I’ve known pushrods to pop out if they’re too slack.

They were prone to wearing out pistons and liners, though as yours is ex-fire engine it’s probably OK, though pay attention to the valve clearances as I’ve known pushrods to pop out if they’re too slack.

l believe its a 540, it ran fine in the fire engine very low mileage for some reason, think it was 31,000 miles, but it could have run for many hours on pumping duty , its got an Alison autobox on the back which appeals to me, i have offered the engine and box into a spare rolling chassis before which is how i know the sump and the diff both want to live in the same spot but i think it couldent go any further back because of the bulkhead, im planning on building my own cab so the bulkhead can go anywhere i choose which might allow me to move the engine back a bit more and give me the clearance i need at the diff, l might have some photos will have to go back a couple of laptops to look for them

I worked on concrete mixers so as much stationary work as driven. The sump pan bolt pattern is mirrored so you may be able to turn it round if you can relocate the oil pickup, good luck!

Most commercial engine sump’s are reversible. Even the alternative pick up pipes are normally listed
