Phase Converter 5HP Will it power a 5.5HP Compressor

Hi

Im back

before i bought a sip airmate 230v to do some sand blasting, but wasn't working was told from eBay buyer and some others i needed a better compressor with better CFM

So i went for a bigger boy a 5.5hp 200L 400v Model

Thing is i working from the garage and i can't afford a new 230v-400v phase converter

So i seen a used 5HP converter on eBay 230-400v will a 5HP Phase converter power my 5.5HP Air compressor which is 5.5hp 400v?????

Or anyone here can do me SUITABLE phase converter for my new big boy airmate,

its over the spec and it wont like the starting load on the compressor specially if its a static converter

Is the supply to your garage up to feeding it? Transwave quote a 32A supply for there 5.5hp rotary.

I would say from experience no way, with a good compressor and a well tuned converter you normally want a good couple of hp in reserve.
When it comes to tough loads to start compressors are about as tough as they come. (from standard)

^^ This... my 15kw boost energy is on a D63 input breaker... Does the transwave use star/delta starting on the idler motor to reduce inrush current? The later, 12kw boost I had (and sold) didn't, and that had a C80 input breaker!

Adam is this a Teco MA7200 4kw by any chance, may be my old one off a certain company.
If so no way will that startup a 3ph 5hp motor if pumps stopped near on full compression it couldn't handle a 3HP on a lathe gears in mid range.

The 7.5kw MA7200 draws 35A 1PH 240V even that would be dubious.

I don't get this whole 'use an oversized vfd as a static converter' business. Clever marketing by drives direct I think... give me a big rotary any day of the week.

It does exactly the same job in fact better than any pseudo 3ph rotary convertor for the same price! Will need exactly the same rated power output well above the rated motor unless just want it for looks.
Not mentioning the downsides of rotary convertors, do have an Transwave RT 5.5kw not used in 6yrs as it wont power a lathe in mid range running 2.25kw motor whereas 7.5kw inverters fine (15kw boost for 10 seconds), 4kw inverter useless as well been there done it.
Its the startup current which can be like trying in my case starting a 9hp+ motor, rotary and all inverters can only handle a certain amount of boost usually 100% for 10 seconds. Just think about motor taking 9 seconds to build up to speed, like trying to pull away in a car in 5th or 6th where 3rds doable.

Would tend to think most if not all that do have inverters don't or wont sell unless figured theyre not man enough for the job. Horrendous prices lately near on £2k for 7.5kw, I paid £900 new 5 3/4 yrs ago which is less than a Transwave convertor was back then.

Hmm, strange. My experience of rotaries has been utterly superb, as has pretty much *everyone* in the US who uses them and also @doubleboost who uses a transwave rotary to power his lathe and mill with no problems at all.

Why do you feel yours is such useless junk? Not that I'm looking for an argument, I just don't like people spreading misinformation on the internet when it might not be called for. Rotaries have their place and I feel they are a good option for a lot of people, anyone stumbling upon this thread might feel that they are all 'useless' and will therefore discount them when the might be just the tool for their application.

i have a static transwave. it runs the Bridgeport miller fine along with my scrap cable stripper and a couple of other motors ok . that's all I need

I also have a static transwave. it is run with a fixed idler motor as it copes detter with small motors that have 3 phase control gear inside. As a long term customer of transwave my only criticism would be how the pair for connecting contactors varies between model and build. Why not pick a combination and stick to it.

So sorry about not replying i had no idea you guys replied, so thanks to all who replied and its helped me a lot, basically all i want to do is use this sand blaster think its 20 gallon common type on eBay etc, i was told i needed 200l 14cfm or was it 14 fAD to do sand blasting?

Think i need a 200l 230v 14fad air compressor? its really just for sand blasting and I'm glad of your comments above, i too think its too much money and over kill for what i need, so i now have TWO X Sip Compressors for sale one is 230v and the other 400v

Does anyone think this model will work for my sand blasting cabinet? don't really want to go to 400v as too much hassle now,

Can't you bring some spare three phase home from work in ya butty bag ??

might it be possible if using it for blasting to start it totally unloaded,then let it get to speed, and only then load it then have an unloader so the motor doesnt stop,because with blasting it will be running close on 80% duty cycle and 100 psi ish should be enough for blasting.

PS mate runs his 7hp compressor from a 10hp static we had to modify supply to garage to 25mm to get it to start though, before on 10mm we had to have the lathe running first as a flywheel.
