Pickhill welder

I seem to have ended up with a “Pickhill Giant“ oil filled welder which I believe has come with my unit when I purchased it. Dragged it out today and it in remarkable condition, and apparently only 20 years old (which tallies as it appears to have been made after 1996 which is when the ”1” digit was added to UK phone numbers)

I have no need for it, I cannot remember the last time I used a stick welder, and already have three other invertor based stick / tig welders. it is also 3 phase which limits its desirability, and weighs an absolute ton.

I could do with the space and don’t like hanging on to stuff I don’t need, but are they that good vs a modern Esab inventor that I should set it up and keep it?

will still be running when your dead and burried. thats nice whip the conection cover off it may be 240v well . might not but worth a look

I use my inverter when a inverter is better ie low hyd and mobile. But for general I use the indestructible oil filled so I don’t use up the inverters limited life unnecessarily. It’s not like mig v arc etc

pretty sure it'll be 240v as well.....just the same as my new'ish Oxford same sorta size.....
dont expect it to weld as well at MAX when on 240 tho......
I also have a 480amp oild filled welder...still welds sweet....prob worth more as scrap.....
will try to sell it in the New Year...
They last forever.....
in one of my old jobs there were several oil filled welders in the works, they were left pluged in and humming for years.....
a good place to dry ur gloves.....hahaha....

i forgot i left my oilcooled plugged in for 2 month it was warm but ok . used it all day building a trailer not even getting hotter

As brightspark stated whip the electrical cover off and see if its 240 volt as well...but if you have 3ph plug it in and try it...

Even if its wired for 3ph, it'll only have 3 wires in the cable (2 power and an earth), but I'll let brightlight spark explain that one. It confuses the hell out of me.......

AC current tends to be a bit more rod sticky on arc up as opposed to DC current, but you probably know that already....

I've got a pickhill bantam 180amp they are damn heavy but so brilliant to weld with id keep it if I were you

As all of the above , its not eating any grass , put it back till the day you need it ,,, and if you have it , you probably never will actually need it ... get rid of it today , and you will need it next week . I think its how things work , it is round here .
