Plastic primer

Has anyone ever used tetrosyl (aerosol) clear plastic primer? is it any good?

Not that one I am afraid but Tetrosyl generally do decent products. If not then Mipa have a good Plastic Primer Aerosol and there are alwasy our friends at Upol.

If you're using celly, I've found that even with the use of UPOL plastic primer, the celly did still crack somewhat on areas which flex.

I have used the above upol and its very flexible on the panel PU sealant, no cracks on it.

The clear is also an adhesive formula that i used on the stonechip for the solvent paint to stick to.

From what ive been told celly is being phased out and is being replaced with acrylic solvent type.

for flexible stuff you need a plasticiser to make the paint remain more flexible not plastic primer

Well i asked for that and the paint shop dont apply that to their paint, Hex it was, they are no longer around anymore though. paint itself does have some flexibility in it, the pu sealant on mine is very flexible with the paint on top.

Paints 4 u and Hex both told me to use the clear adhesive primer before the paint.

Celly is not being supplied anymore from what ive been told, its now acrylic solvent base coat, unless the celly word is over used somewhat ?

I think the C White member might have not left enough flash off time ? I had a 20 degrees C temp when doing mine and the car's inner wings were lukewarm beforehand, not cool to the touch. Im not sure why it would crack because mine hasn't anywhere.

who ever told you cellulose is not available is talking rubbish i can still buy it, most likely is that they are no longer stocking it due to low demand but still want you to but from them.
if his paint cracked then it was either a reaction or the workpiece already had hairline cracks in is this is common with glassfible panels

Off topic but what is the difference to acrylic and celly, they are both solvent based ?

I did exactly as it said on the tin, perhaps your innerwing doesn't flex as much as a plastic front bumper. It took a few months before the cracking at the flexible edge happened so perhaps you have that fun to come?.

I keep seeing this statement on here, but I bought some last week without any problems. I asked the guy in the paint suppliers if it was being phased out, and he said that he was not aware of any plans to do away with it. He did say that there was less call for it since the water based paints became popular, but he still sells celly on a regular basis.

Is this just a rumour or what?

It's not that water-based is more popular, it's that professional bodyshops are under pressure to ensure that the least offensive to the environment paint is used. Celly is usually only sold for hobby use.

You can get Celly in any colour or quantity you want straight from the likes of Jawel. Most local places near me just want to sell 2K and that's it ( and way over priced ) Cannot beat online shopping for anything you want.

No it wont flex, if at all, i have a weld in strut brace so the legs will have limited movements. The inner wings have their seams welded in a stitch fashion as well.

Wouldn't 2k plastic primer be more suited even at a cost of a pro to do it if you dont have the safety equipment ?

there are plasticisers out there such as the one below which says it is suitable for nitro cellulose but finding a stockist may be a different matter,

Santicizer benzoates are used in a wide range of applications:


•in adhesives: polyvinyl acetate, hot melts,...
•in caulks and sealants: latex systems, polyurethane, polysulfide, ...
•in paints and coatings: PVC, acrylic, nitrocellulose, polyurethane, ...
•in flexible PVC: film, sheet, plastisols, wire & cable, calendering, sealants, foams, ...

im also not sure wheather everyone understands the use of plastic primer, plastic primer is only for bare plastic.
if you have a bumper with sound paint on it then you only need to flat it an d re paint it

Ive seen plastic primer that states it's also good for stonechip and paints on the instructions.

What does the clear adhesive plastic primer do exactly, just stick well and flex or sort of etches into it ?

it gives good adhesion to the plastic surface it doesnt promote flexibility
