Please educate me on air-fed filters (eg coalescing, carbon) and regulators

(2 questions - further down, in bold)

Im setting up for 2k.

I have the mask and belt pack. I have a 14cfm compressor. I have the gun. That's it...
My old regulator / water trap isnt worth resurrecting, so, i figure i need all sorts.


Is the idea -

Compressor > Regulator & trap > Coalescing > Carbon > Belt pack

> Mask
> Regulator on gun (?) > Gun

??

The belt pack says max 7 bar, i think, so it needs a regulator before it. Do i take down to gun pressure at this point, or do i do that at the gun itself?


Also, im not sure what filters i need at the compressor end? I understand i want a regulator / water trap, and the coalescing filter, but do i need the carbon at this point? The belt pack has a carbon filter. I also see "3 stage" units - im guessing they are pre-filter, carbon, coalescing. Again, unsure...

I am not attempting to belittle or annoy just trying to understand the issue you have highlighted.
If others understand the issue you have then I am glad to be educated with the responses .

From what I read and was told when installing mine general consensus was reg/filter coalesing filter then carbon filter on the wall, and belt filter.
With the sperian 2 I have it has a warning whistle.
From honeywells specifications "Warning whistle : operates when the supply pressure is insufficient to guarantee the user’s safety"
From memory wall reg is set at about 90psi to stop whistle operating when using a spraygun.
Then spraygun has a regulator to adjust pressure as feed from waist belt

I know you have the devilbiss regulator/mask, but I would check that your compressor can keep up with volume of air required to operate both together. Devilbiss and Honeywell quote different air requirements for what seems to be the same unit

I take it this is for home use, not industrial, so my advise is this.
Concern yourself about fume/paint extraction as well as an airfed mask, if your extraction is good you don't 100% need an airfed mask, because the extraction is introducing clean air into your environment and taking away the fumes etc.
Second point, is a 14cfm compressor might not have enough grunt to run a gun & mask, others have 2 compressors, 1 for each, good idea and they must be outside of the spraying area so they use fresh air, obviously.
3 stage filtering on air supply. 1 standard filter reg for spray gun. ebay..110627184626 , 2/3 stage filter/charcoal for breathing..ebay..151030060317, regulate the air supply at the gun with a small pressure reg also a filter..ebay....122004127652, 182169256573.
Spraying at home is an expensive setup to do safely if you take my advise that is, it depends on how much paint you need to do, as an occasional thing it doesn't really justify it IMO.

I think the amount of extraction needed is almost impossible to do on a home setup to negate the need for an air fed. I spray in a double garage with the doors wide open and there is no way I could go with out an air fed, the overspray just hangs in there.

Agree that 14cfm was not enough for my setup. My Sperian mask seems to use a LOT of air.

I should have added to use a twin filter charcoal mask, if you have decent enough extraction, I didn't mean "no mask required"
And that's my point about the overspray just hangs there, put a fan in the wall it's not expensive.
Yes I would use a charcoal air line filter, the fine partilces and odour it removes is important

Nice video, only thing I'm not sure about is the air regulator between the sperian regulator and your face mask. As I thought the idea was to provide excess air to the face mask

I put it in there as the air consumption was so high, from a safety point of view you would say that's wrong but I felt it was flowing a lot more than I needed.

I know what you mean, according to the specifications for the sperian air requirement is 290 l/m or 10.24 cfm

I have another compressor that's not a million miles from being sorted, so, if the air requirements exceed my current unit, ill get my act together and finish that one off. I have no idea as to the output of my 2nd unit, but its a twin cylinder belt drive, with a 2kw motor, so it should do a bit.

Its likely that ill be spraying in the open air initially. My first work will be with upol raptor, where the finish is not a consideration. Further down the line, ill probably move indoors, but that wont be until my workshop is rebuilt.

Im going to look up the ebay items mentioned above now, and see if i cant get a list together for approval.

You need a charcoal filter or you run the risk of lipid pneumonia from oil inhalation.

It takes a lot out but not everything. Oil,in your lungs is not good. My diving air compressors have triple stacks for that reason.
