Please help: acetone!!!!!

Please help!

I have a plastic dashboard for my car. I stripped the existing damaged finish with acetone.

The black shiny plastic went a dark cloundy grey.. I painted over it and now the paint sticks fine, but always takes a dark grey (faded) tinge.

I want to paint the dashboard black. The acetone keeps turning the paint grey.

Is there any way to remove the acetone stained plastic?

I'm such a lemon for attempting this!

What did you apply prior to the black? Did you prime it or just paint straight onto the plastic?

i have put on high build primer, the yellow stuff mate.

The yellow went on ok and dried fine, its just the black that doesn't want to dry the colour its supposed to be

any suggestions bud?

I'd think it's likely to be the high build leetching through, rather than the acetone. (Should have used low build plastic primer!)

Unsure of what to suggest, really. You could try leaving it somewhere warm for a week or so and paint again. If that doesn't work, re-trim it in alcantara?

The only thing I can think of is to rub it back to the yellow primer, apply an isolator (barcoat), prime and finish, that should hopefully prevent anything from bleeding through though don't quote me on that as I'm not a painter, just a diy dabbler.
You may have to be a bit patient with this thread, there are just a few pro painters on here so it's just a case of waiting til one spots this thread.

Is it thunderstorming up there? We had a good one here today - electricity went off again.

Wondering it it's a bit humid whether the paint is blooming. If it's cellulose and the grey has a slightly metallic look to it from some angles it might be that. T-cut should remove bloom.

Kind of off topic, but can I ask where you purchased the acetone from? I was looking for some a while back to clean out my supercharger intercooler, but couldn't find any.

now that is strange.

I have tried a bit of t cut, nothing to lose, looks bad as it is.

It seems to have worked, although a little more shiny than I'd hoped for.

What is this blooming mate?

It happens when you spray in humid conditions. When the solvent in the paint evaporates it cools the surface of the paint. Water from humid air condenses on cool surfaces and leaves a matt grey surface on the still drying paint.

I'd guess it is blooming if the T-cut helped. Could be worth waiting for a bright sunny day and giving it another coat.

I'll t cut it tonight, then wait for the better weather and give it a final coat.

Once i've t cutted it, how do i prep it for the final coat? I'm just thinking as t cut has polish in it?

Hehe, that's a case of not being able to see the woods for the trees!
Didn't even think of it being caused by blooming as my mind was on the acetone!
See, told you I'm not a painter!
If T-cut gives the desired finish then there's no need to put any more paint on it.

Had the same trouble before. Very common problem painting in Scotland in the winter, and cellulose paint is really bad for it as it dries quickly. On the up side cellulose isn't so bad for flies as it dries quickly .

I'd not T-cut it all, just paint over. Though I'm not a pro type so could be wrong. The T-cut doesn't have silicone nasties so can be painted over once wiped off and panel wiped. If the plastic has a textured finish it might be worth spraying a bit of brake cleaner over to get the T-cut out of the cracks before spraying.

I'm fairly sure it is blooming and not acetone, I hope so, I think a new dash fascia is around £200 from stealership, and none on scrap yards as they are too time consuming to remove.

I hope tomorrow is a dry day! I've soent around £30 on rattle cans already lol can't afford this next attempt to go wrong!

Acetone evaporates very quickly so unless there's some trapped by some chance, it isn't that, and if it were it'd attack the paint squirted on it.

For sources, fibreglass supplies or chandlers / marine supplies.

Warm the tinnies in water, shake them now & then. Not super hot... just warm. Have the part so it's not outdoors-cold, room temp would be OK. Thin coats are better than thick ones, less chance of bloom.
