Please Recommend A Gear Oil Dispenser Pump

Having just transferred most of a 20 litre drum of EP90 into the front axle of my JCB, one litre at a time via hand squirty bottles while lying under it on the floor, and ending up with at least half a litre of spillage on the floor, it's time I got something better to do the job. It's not something I have to do very frequently but this isn't the first time it's been a pain in the backside.

I did try using my 12v diesel transfer pump, but even on 24v the oil was too heavy for it.

Draper do a hand bicycle style pump that screws into a drum but it looks awfully plasticy - anyone used one?

So suggestions please !

I've got a couple of pneumatic pumps which fit to oil barrels, attached to retractable compressed air style hose thingies, with digital metering gauges on delivery.

Suited for industrial garages, doing lots of oil changes.

The seller on marketplace didn't know what they were.

I have a number of these for such duties - one for old oil, one for new, another for fuel etc (lubricate the fuel one after use or it seizes and pulling the handle results in you holding a handle . . . and the rest of the pump in the other. Comes apart for repair though).

I heat mine up before I pump it in too, it sure helps with making it flow better.

20 odd years ago, a specialist in one of my cars suggested microwaving the oil to get it to flow - apparently it really made the microwave sound to be working hard.

I asked a Millers oils rep when he called about something at work - he didn't recommend it, as couldn't be too sure what exactly it was doing to longer chain molecules in the oil. Sounded impressively worrying enough for me to stick with the pan of hot water.

I have nuked it before but now I use a saucepan and just heat it up gently. the mrs didnt like the smell of it in the microwave

I use a pressurised type tank that i made.
Runs at about 10psi and forces the oil through pretty quickly.

Yes I’m sure that it would flow better warmed, but not really practical with 17 litres in an axle !

I had one of those from Harbour Freight overseas. It worked ok, but I had to replace the hoses with a softer type as the ones that came with it were too stiff and wanted to jump out of the bottle or jug and coil themselves back up; awkward to say the least.

I made one similar from a lorry air tank, even with gear oil it doesn’t need much air pressure. I have the tap at the end of the hose rather than on the tank.

I have made (adapted is more accurate probably) a waste oil tank for the truck for when I change customers oil. It’s only 10l capacity.

I sort of used the idea of the ones that go under cars whereby you have a big valve on the neck and a small output port and an airline fitting. When it’s full close the neck and put the airline on LOW pressure () and connect another hose to the outlet. Works fine. My description is crap probably.

I will supply pictures later. It’s so I could mount it under the truck out of the way but still empty it easily.

Anyhow, you could make something similar for clean oil only?

A few of that style pop up on eBay and Facebook Marketplace but they are always miles away and sellers want to sell them as display antiques with a commensurate price.

if I found one within sensible distance I’d snap it up!
