Pneumatic drawbar.

For years now I have had the materials to build a Pneumatic drawbar like this.

But after using the mill last week I am confused as to how you knock down the draw bar to release the collet?

If it's not a captive drawbar, then you need to modify it so that it is with a surface to press against when unwound.

If you are pulling/holding the impact gun down onto the drawbar so the socket goes over the hex on the drawbar, when it unwinds, it cannot go upwards. Hence, the collet can only go downwards. I was under the impresion that R8 collets (unlike Morse taper ones) are non-stick.

Some stick some dont.
