i'm making a double flight stainless steel & glass spiral staircase & need the stainless polishing to a white satin finish[close to 450grit] i'm unsure wether to invest in my own sanders [already have a proper mask] or sub it out ,in which case any recommendations within hereford/s.wales area ,the fabrications are 102mm sleeve welded to a welded segment of 40mm angle, forming each tread. is it an expensive process, being quite labour intensive?

Hi,
I have always done my own stuff, with sandpaper, belts and 'Scotch' mops. But I would do all the parts before welding, then pickle and polish the welded areas. Much easier than getting into corners afterwards (though you will still have to do some of that.)

Mostly a belt sander and a foam drum with a belt on the outside. Fairly cheap from Axminster. The scotch mops were mostly '80' grade for a brushed finish. Also the little flap drums. I did eye up a belt tool with two drums running off a sort of adapted angle grinder, mostly for tube, but it was quite expensive and I wasn't sure of future use.

Nick, slight whoops on the grade for mops. I have some by PFERD at A180, not the 80 I mentioned. This is for brushed finish. RPM is 4,000 optimum. 7,500 max.
To tidy up I use flap discs over 100 grade. But 80 for general rounding off and weld 'prettying'. I am not a specialist, it is just my experience, so it might be best to ask a supplier of stuff. I just used the grit that suited from my SS warehouse and made sure I didn't use it for any other material. The belts look just the same as general purpose ones. Very little of my work need to be showroom, more functional like the cooling system for Sir Cliff's winery.

Abrasive type (inc stiffness of backing material), surface speed, the amount of pressure applied etc all effect things... flap wheel for example is less aggressive than belts due to the amount of 'give'. In short don't pay too much attention to the grit used when producing a sheet of stainless with a #4 or 2J finish
In addition to what Kemppi has said Paul gave away some of the trade secrets in this thread http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/finishing-a-mitred-joint.27837/ and the various companies that make specialised kit all have vids showing the process, google 'metabo* stainless polishing' for example just have a stiff drink before pricing any of it!
