Poor coverage

Hi all, I'm spraying some bike fairings yellow and have very poor paint coverage. I used a buff primer in some areas and grey in other where I did a few extra repairs. The paint is having real difficulties covering the primer, especially the darker grey primer. About 4 coats and it's still visible, where the buff primer is it's much better and closing in on the correct colour. The paint is basecoat, says medium solids on the tin. Thinned 1:1 it seems very very thin. I reckon it's just a combination of the yellow and poor quality paint and I need to keep going with extra coats until I get sufficient coverage, every other time I've painted 2 coats was enough but I have more experience of spraying solid colours rather than basecoats. Seem to be using an inordinate amount of paint too because of the number of coats I'm putting down. I bought this paint online as it was cheaper than my normal supplied but called up my normal supplier and they said said grey primer was fine for this colour. In hindsight I should have used the buff primer all over.

Any experience with yellow, is this typical?

I always put a ground coat under primary colours as they have strong pigments. White for yellow and black for blue and red but im old skool and some of the more modern painters including well respected ones on here say its not necessary as the modern paints hold out better. Thinning seems about right for basecoat. Just have to keep building I think.

I've had that with yellow cellulose. Took about 4 coats to get any sensible coverage. A white primer would have helped a lot.

yellow is a ****** , id suggest getting some matching paint in something like ford diamond white ,lay down some of that until its all uniform and then on with the yellow

Things have improved a bit after about 4 more coats, just keep adding coats but absolute bummer, definitely should have gone for the buff primer all the way.

It can affect the final colour using different colour primers as well. We had a Suzuki SV650 top fairing that took a lot of matching.

For yellow it's got to be white primer all the way for ease of coverage.
Do a spray out card with the black x on and you'll see the difference in costs it takes to cover Too many coats can lead to problems so be carefull fine line between plenty of paint and too much paint

Funny you should say that, SV650, colour match looks alright in the tin but not on the fairing.

The one we had was drying sort of yellowy orange so we had it tinted lighter in the end and it was good enough for an old bike.

This seems too light and bright in colour. Frankly somewhat annoyed as took another look tonight and 3/4 of paint used and coverage is still fairly poor. I'm thinking poor quality paint or something as have not had this problem in the past.
