POR-15 System

Just had a heads up from Frosts, anyone tries this remedy?

Not used Por15 myself but it seems well liked on many forums. I have read several times though that good preparation is absolutely essential for it to stick.

Used POR15 on a car floor, after a coup!e of years it just peeled off in large sections and my prep was meticulous. Would never use it again. Much better 2k epoxy and epoxy mastic paints about.

POR-15 is excellent when used as intended. It is definitely NOT suitable for good, clean metal and it WILL peel off in sheets, even when well keyed. That is what caused the negativity about the product.

POR-15 is meant for pitted de-rusted or lightly rusted metal. It is *superb* on weathered galvanising and the like. I have used it extensively in the past for chassis and suspension components shielded from sunlight.

It takes about a week to get of your hands. Burdekin knows his stuff but IMO, it is tough stuff.

I used por 15 on the z thou , even with my poor attempt at prep ( lack of patience ) it's not leaking yet .
I also should have spent more time rotating the tank as the stuff was setting . you can see where I left it in one place , went for a smoke , turned the tank , got a cuppa , turned the tank , had a go at some tigging , turned the tank , feed the fish , turned the tank - untill dryish then left it right way up .
On a plus note the bottom of my tank will never leak !
Also grease and mask well any threads .

I did consider using it, but while searching the web looking for info on it, i found as many negative posters as positive. Also it is not uv stable, it will fade with sunlight.

I used it extensively on a beetle resto. It is very, very tough which is why it peels off in sheets so well when it fails to adhere to the base properly. It also "wicks" well which is why it does work on very well weathered steel.

Almost everything I used it on was surface rusted and/or sandblasted and it's held up well 25,000 miles / 8yrs later. Was top coated too though.

I'd still epoxy mastic if I did it again though, por15 is overpriced. Frankly if you get the rust out, any paint will do, cars don't generally rot from comprised outer paint/stonechips anyway, they rot from water traps and hidden moist areas it's nigh on impossible to get paint into.

yeah I used some about 12 to 15 years ago, my preparation was as the instructions and 2 to 3 years later it was peeling off, both on rusty and clean metal. epoxy paints seem to be the way frowards for me too

I used POR-15 on the transmission sump of my Range Rover and really happy with the results 2 years on and after two winters worth of abuse (it's a working vehicle). I did follow the prep instructions to the letter, however I didn't bother with a top coat as the underside of my vehicle isn't subject to a lot of UV - just gave 2 coats of black POR-15.

didnt really work out for me ...peeled off in places despite following the instructions

doesnt really make sense to paint over rust , i make an effort to remove as must rust as i can then use an epoxy primer , it sticks well and doesnt go off in the tin

I have an unopened tin in the shed, deciding what to use it on. Maybe the gate which I'll eventually get the materials together for, before I paint it.
