Evening all.
Had the joyful task of welding a small axle on my old man's small tar tanker.all out of position work where you have to be a contortionist to get to it...a nice few runs and bang..a little line of porosity. .and that barst--d stuff will not weld over even the slightest. ..anyway after a grueling time digging the stuff out and another go all sorted.only to forget to have my mark on when tapping the Slag off.bang.streight in my eye...I hate mma sometimes. ....

I was welding last week overhead my elbows are peppered with burns and I caught a big bit of slag burnt through the overalls and burnt my shoulder , its sore !

Ah, it's good to know that I'm not the only one, I thought it was just me getting the rotten positions!

Sometimes so out of position it often takes me 20 minutes to get out from under what I been working on..arms all twisted..can see a lot because my lid pressed against all sorts.you know to one lol..

Top tip- never put a cheap plastic lighter in the top pocket of your overalls when welding, unless your after a scorched chin look

As good tip.as it's something I have done on numerous occasions. ...it's them silly things we sometimes forget that causes the most injuries. ..

I did my Ag-Eng apprenticeship with an International Harvester dealership in the dim distant, and we were would not allowed to have lighters of any kind on our persons at any time either at the depot or out on-site. Apparently the year before I started work there one of the mechs was welding a bucket wear strip onto an IH 175 Drott, a spark hit the lighter, the fluid blew, and the plastic shrapnel killed him.

Yes, if you are unlucky you can get on the receiving end of a very large amount of force, little plastic lighters are much more dangerous than many realise.
If carrying a lighter when welding/grinding I suggest a Zippo (or that style) as it won't go with a bang. Just got to remember to keep topping it up with fluid...
