I shouldn’t worry about the material of the cup too much but on what material the old chisel is and how you’ll go about welding it.
I’d put a bit of preheat on it and some post heat and let it cool slowly, otherwise you’ll get cracks or brittleness

I am wondering if I might not be better off making the whole thing out of EN8 or EN24.
I have been using one for many years and for banging fence posts in they are great. Problem is I have now got a bigger digger and breaker and the old cup wont fit. I would go back to the chap that sold me the last one but £400 + vat is grating somewhat.

The second option, that company actually want £500 for their 6" version. The first option is a bit too specialised for me - I occasionally need to break up concrete.
How much of your pecker sticks out when it's fully retracted ?
Just thinking could you make your own with a bowl welded to a piece of pipe who's internal diameter is slightly larger that the pecker's shaft, with a few bolts screwing through the pipe to grip the pecker's shaft ? All the bolts are to do is stop if falling off when you lift off the post.

I have ordered the material now. I have gone for EN8, 1 lump of 160mm x 100mm and 1meter of 70mm round. Should be here by next Thursday so as long as the weather doesn't go so cold that my hands stick to the lathe handles I will be able to knock one up over the break. I have attached a photo of the previous digger and 5" post cup.
I been busy turning down this post knocker and I had a thought 
. As it stands the only thing joining the stem to the cup is going to be the weld - I was thinking if I thread the end it should take a lot of the stress off of the weld, or am I over engineering this thing.

Just a thought, but could you just make a socket for the 'pecker' and epoxy it in place? Or arrange a clamp as mentioned above? So joining the materials without the need to weld them together.

Well I finally got around to finishing it. I decided put a 3mm thread on the stem and cup. As I managed to get a nice fit I think I will try using it tomorrow and see if I can get away without welding. To be honest its a bit of a handful to maul around when its together.
Question for all you machinists, I had lots of chatter problems when threading the stem despite using the steady rest and a live center. I am wondering if I am missing something fundamental.
