powder coating a scoot

found a good price on ebay for blasting back to bare metal and powdercoating to a colour of choice on vespas and lambrettas, ive never had any experience of powder coating before so just have some questions-

1. whats the finish like, is it smooth, runny? what?
2. is it overpaintable?, id like striped design, ie, powdercoated base and painted stripes on top
3. how tough is it? does it chip easily? does it fade?
4 would you reccomend it for everyday use on a scooter in the rain?! :P

1/ depends on the person doing the job.
2/ yes
3/it's tough,fade wise very likely depends on colour,some colour fand more than others.
4/ should be ok.

Some is very tough, some is not much tougher than paint.

told ya it was a good deal!, the pics of the frames are a bit crap, but the rest of the stuff looks ok, im thniking about sending ma dads frame down for an xmas gift, hopefully get him started on building the bloody thing!

Bawjaws there is a good place in Leven that does powder coating (and I think chrome too), Kingdom Coatings, he does a lot of bike stuff

My local place does one for £160 - thats frame and all the parts!!

Smooth but tends to be a bit "orage peely"

2. is it overpaintable?, id like striped design, ie, powdercoated base and painted stripes on top

Sure over paintable but with a wet paint laid over the top you will still see a level of orange peel

3. how tough is it? does it chip easily? does it fade?

Quite tough - Doesn't fade (well nothing I have had done has yet)

4 would you reccomend it for everyday use on a scooter in the rain?! :P

I had all the suspension arms and sub assembies done on several cars and it is very durable

My only concern with this cheap price is that they are just going to sandblast it and powdercoat it regardless of the finish.
There may be little dents and dings in the sheet metal panels, they are not going to panelbeat then and sand them down before powdercoating

That occurred to me. Many of the Vespas I've blasted have turned out like lace once all the filler has gone, and Lambretta leg shield supports are usually bent.

The ones I blast go on to a welder and then to the painter who uses filler where necessary.

I did the same on one of the Footboards of the Lambretta, it looked like a collander after I blasted it!
It was completely rotten

Powdercoat reacts to some paint and wrinkles like crazy, I wouldn't risk it. I've seen it happen on kit chassis where people have scratched it and tried to touch it in with similar coloured paint and caused more problem than it covered.
