Powdercoating Oven.

Looking at monopolizing on the lack of Powder Coating in my area. (If they exist - they are not well advertised!)

I've looked on the Caswell Forum, but the place is an absolute mess - Not as organised as here! So i'm looking to get some sense out of people who may have built there one on here.

So I've done some reading and I've decided i could build a decently sized one for about £700-800 with enough room to fit 4 wheels or a motorcycle frame.

Outside Dimensions 1000x1000x2000m, Internal Dimensions 800x800x1800mm. Wall thickness of 100mm. Using 4 x 1800w cooker elements fitted into 50mm recessed sections at the bottom of the over. Then using a high temp fan to circulate air from the top center and feeding it back down the rear wall exiting at the bottom of the oven.

Looking to make the entire frame from 100mm galved stud wall C Channel, comes in decent lengths for the money. it is quite thin, but with enough cross bracing and centers - it should hold itself together.

Try here: https://www.powder365.com/forum/ Plenty of info on home build ovens. Would have thought blast cleaning/prep set up would have been far more costly than oven though, and might be worth taking a close look at all the likely costs before building an oven?

Wow, that's an impressive build in the article!

It all sounds feasable, I'm no fabricator so I'll leave the mechanical aspects to other more qualified people, but my day job is designing/commissioning control systems, and I deal with lots of kilns and furnaces. If there's anything I can help with there then let me know.

Looking to make the entire frame from 100mm galved stud wall C Channel, comes in decent lengths for the money. it is quite thin, but with enough cross bracing and centers - it should hold itself together.

The metal c stud I used to use could flip round and clip together to make a box section for extra strength.

Cleaning wise, i was going to build a rather large double cabinet. something along the lines of this...

Large enough to get a car door/ bike frame in - Maybe a overkill. But bigger is always better....

Had the crazy idea of having double pressure pots, one for media, one for soda (Left and right respectively in the cabinet) Or would you consider this overkill?

I reckon i could build the blasting cabinet for cira £700-800 as well, Pressure pots included.

its not going to happen using that setup. I had a 6x8foot shed for doing motorbike frames and wheels in open blasting and was using a 90cfm comp with a decent pot running a 6mm jet that would be your minimum

if your going to do modern wheels the coatings will be hard to remove with blasting they need a chemical dip 1st to remove coating and blasting to remove corrosion

I don't know whats used now but I used to use phenol I very much doubt u can buy it . its lethal

So would I be insane saying I wanted to strip a single 15" wheel in 10 minutes or less? What sort of setup would I be looking at. As I initially was looking at the cheap

not a chance. I went through it all experimenting with different size compressors and guns 40 years ago and ended up with decent gear finaly but it would be an expensive business and setup to get in to now . I'm not trying to put u off but u will be soon disappointed trying

Been there done that. Got the T shirt (even a url) but sold the cabinet.

Don't waste your money.

If the wheel is powder coated impossible to prepare it for powder in 15 minutes, even with professional gear. If you are serious about doing commercial powder coating, then budget at least £8-10k for used gear. I know of a low hours screw compressor for £1500, which would handle the blasting side of things, but obviously its 3 phase and pretty heavy duty. Making blast cabinets out of wood, and cobbling up cheap DIY ovens is fine if you want to do a few parts of your own, but bearing in mind the cost and aggravation involved with this sort of thing, it would take a fair amount of time before you saved anything much over the cost of having your parts finished professionally.

Our oven is 4000x2400x2400its made from box and 2mm sheeting with insulation between sheets heated using gas ovens are handy enough made its prep where you want to make sure you set up well

Think I've got the lines mixed somewhere. This thread was mainly for the DIY Powdercoating side of things, but the shot blasting is part of the process.

I've currently got a suction fed blaster using an eBay gun, using an old 2000ltr water container as a cabinet. Takes me around an Hour to do a single wheel...Just the blasting process. I have an Old-ish SIP Compressor that runs 13cfm.

I would like to reduce this time as much as possible. 15-20 minutes a wheel. But its not just wheels i want to do, i want to offer generic shotblasting and powdercoating services. Talking anything really as long as fits in the over. from suspension components, sub frames etc

I'm currently building a 7ftx4ft(h)x3ft(d) oven and its taken me hours of research :-/ I think my early pics are on the forum but I'll post another fresh one tomorrow.
Basically I dropped the idea of electric as I'd have needed just under 40amps!! So I'm using a diesel burner as I buy red diesel for 62p a litre (joys of living on a boat) so a 30min heat up / burn will cost around 11p!! My oven structure is all laser cut and folded which for the ease and accuracy isn't that expensive. My doors are nearing the end of design ready for cutting late next week. Also tomorrow will be control box wiring schematic design before a well earned beer :-)
I'll post pics tomorrow night as I'm playing with powder coating gun on coating complex parts in order to eliminate Faraday affect.

And as for blasting, my next project is a 10ft square homemade blasting room, hodge clemco blast pot driven be a 'roadworks' type diesel compressor... Estimated budget 5-6k :-(

I did look towards the Diesel/ Kero route. As our house is Oil Fired. 22p a Liter....But i was worried about the exhaust fumes in an enclosed space.
