powdercoating question

when you send something in to be powdercoated do you have it zinc primed first or is it just powdercoated with the colour this is for bare steel motorbike frame

ive just seen them blasted clean then powder coated straight to steel, never seen them primed first, not to say it cant be done ive just never seen it

I understand you can powdercoat with primer and then the top coat.

If it's steel it really wants a anti corrosion etch underneath, helps to stop rust creep under the coating. Needs to be able to take the heat, so I'd get them to do it.

At least 2 of the powder coaters I use, offer to prime, I'd do it for a frame

Thanks for the advice guys i will go with the primer then the colour coat as i want it to last

I had my gates and railings galvanised and then powder coated.... Overkill probably but hopefully they should require zero maintenance for a good while to come!

I I remember correctly though the galvanising was the most expensive bit of the job!

Hi,

I would always suggest getting the items Primed 1st as the powder can only offer so much Corrosion Protection on it's own.

A good Zinc Powder Primer will give 1000hrs Salt Spray Resistance to rust creeping which is pretty good when talking about looking after your pride and joy

What about an iron[or zinc] phosphate pre-treatment[before the epoxy primer]?

The place I use Chromate prime (greenish colour) before powder coating
