practice v up pipe too

Hi guys and girls had some time at home thought I'd rock out some welding on me thermal arc I got some pre tacked pipe and pre rooted plate from dad's today thought I'd give it a good go the plate is v up I tried phoenix 2.5 7016 rods they are nice and capped with a nexus 3.2 lo hi
1. Is my open root bit 70 amps
2. Is the pen
3. Is my cap 120 amps
4. Is my run round flat fixed 6g I think

I may be wrong but none of them look like you've cleaned the metal back before welding. Also hard to comment on the weld when they've not been cleaned well enough after either. I know sometimes when you want to crack on you don't bother and think "I'll just grab a quick picture" but it's worth cleaning off because it can show you much more about your weld.

Expect a dramatic improvement if you follow the advise above. Clean the steel and prep to bright and clean thoroughly between runs to avoid slag inclusions

This true I pulled it out me scrap yard and welded it I only get small bits of time with my welder before its needed for some thing I've got a few bits of six inch and 3 inch pipe from my fitting days I'll v it up butt it up and shut it up.
Yesterday really was about running those 7016 rods they are very nice smooth arc nice in position but they don't do down hand which don't effect me to much but for the price 30 quid it's alright

Not perfect but defo getting better. Pics not that clear but No 4 shows you are fairly confident with the rods.
Phoenix 7016 rods are the best IMO and you should be able to run a perfect down hand bead with these. (i assume you dont mean vertical down)
You dont have to get the metal to shiny clean but if you dont its like putting cheap fuel in a ferrari-it will still work but it wont be the best performance
No 3 is more of a hot pass than a cap and 120amps for a 2.5 is far too many amps

Oops sorry mate I forgot to put that the 120 amps was with the 3.2 nexus rods. And deffently a nice rod to use in v up and overhead like I said I got more pipe I will practice more.

its been mentioned already about good clean up prior but some of that scrap looks real ugly and if your doing ugly looking old steel rod selection can help 6010 for instance

6010 is a cellulosic rod designed for open roots. I'm far from an expert with them but they do require a high OCV from your machine and technique is very different to the usual way you would run an electrode. Down hand with a whipping motion is the usual on pipe route. I'll be honest I'm no good with them really.

Don't go buying 6010's unless you know you're machine can burn them. 6011's are also cellulosic but not as demanding from a machine point of view.

Yes, it was just really a comment about the steel. 6010 has a needs a tight arc and no not all plants like them. It is a good rod for deep penetration and fast freeze and handles crud on the weld a bit better than most because of these facts. I should not go buying them by the box but if you had a few or could come by them another matter, I should never buy anything special for practicing on stuff out the scrap pile

For me? I get mostly anything done with a good quality 6013 and 7018 anything else might in general will be asked specifically for or given.

I understand that guys I think I've came across them I may have the wrong view on how I use my rods but I generally use 6013 rods for anything flat and lo highs for position work I can go in position with 6013 rods I just prefer that method of welding

The 1 means all positional but ok some don't ESAB, MUREX, etc certainly can do - just don't try super six or other cheapies it will give a false impression. Being an all round medium to light penetrating rod that's very machine and user friendly there are a lot of lower quality 6013 about with off centre fluxing etc

6013 and 7018 are both all positional rods so I wouldn't be chosing one from another based on the position I was welding, I would chose one from another based on the application of the job.

its not so relevant as many think and might have us all believe if its 70 or 60 when you consider other factors on the tensile strength but that's changing the subject a bit. I have a feeling that if you picked a 7018 from a plain white box it might weld better than a 6013 from the same white box positional due to factors already mentioned in 6013 production / markets.

Well guys I do like my nexus 2.5 &3.2 7018 rods for most things I do in my scrap yard but if I got some serious work I do use murex 3.2 and 2.5 6013 and I was using The fin cords 7018 I think but I'm now using the phoniex 7016 rods
