Pre pointed bar-as opposed to railheads-still available? (pics)

Is it actually possible to obtain bar (square or round) that is already pointed? I ask that because while out & about cycling around Sheffield today, I came by some railings (maybe quite old) that appeared to be just that-ready pointed. Or, maybe they were shaped individually by some guy with a grinder from their “normal ends-surely not?

Note also the unusual “angled” points in pic No 2. I `ve never come across any like that before. Oh dear, I’m feeling a bit like a train spotter now.

That looks like a bit of "real" wrought iron. The top bar has been punched to make the hole...you can just see it bulging where the upright bars go through. The points would probably have been forged on an anvil or power hammer.

Those are forged ends. I have come across a machine in the past that is made specifically to machine a point on the ends of round bar for railing tops. Nothing like a lathe funilly enough.

i once did about 60 10mm round bar with a grinder talk about boring never again

most railings were like that years ago but I thought they'd been banned as unsafe?

It's too easy for people to hurt themselves on such things...

I don't know whether there are any particular regulations covering that sort of thing. There are plenty of galvanised pallisade fences, with the three sharp points on top, around nowadays...but most of them are at least 1.8m high.It may be more down to a fear of being sued.Or they may not be seen around much anymore because originaly it was cheaper to forge a point on a bar rather than some fancy shape. But now all these different shapes can be bought cheaply and welded on.

Yes that is what went through my mind Astro when i say them & took the photo, but as has been said you prob cannot get them these days.

As Peter infers, they can be quite dangerous. I have heard of two incidents where kids have been inpaled on them. Its the very thin round pointy ones that look the most dangerous.

Yeah, we had some of those round the playing fields opposite my house as a kid - didn't stop everyone climbing over to get though. Still there and the kids still do...

What i mean is i doubt they could be bought in the same way as things like rail heads and gate panels etc. As you say they would have to be knocked up (or knocked off)

As for not seeing many about, most were taken down in WWII for Munitions, all that is left to show is the holes in the Yorkstone copping with the lead in them. The local School had them restored a few yrs ago, looks very nice

Wasn't that all propoganda, and the actual wrought iron was no good for melting down to make anything. It was all so people would feel like they were making a contribution to the war effort.

WW2, it was aluminium pots and pans. They were of course no use for making the Spitfires and Lancasters they were intended for.

We had some pin sharp railings around the playing field when we were kids in the 70's. They got filed blunt in the PC early 90's.
