Prescription safety glasses?

Hi it's come to that stage in my life where I can't see details and need glasses. I would like a pair of safety glasses but the opticians I went to gave me a choice of six in a box that they wouldn't open for me to try on. I have a high ridge noise that make fitting safety glasses difficult as I get a large gap at the bottom of the lens.
Does any one have suggestions of where I can look that isn't going to break the bank ¿

Do you want proper safety glasses with the proper side screens or just a general pair of glasses to keep carp out, if its the latter just buy the biggest frame from the general range (plastic or metal) that fits you and get it fitted with safety lenses.

For a long time my missus was an optical glazer so I used to get free glasses. I tried both glass and plastic lenses in my glasses and came to the conclusion that grinding sparks will embed themselves into both types but plastic is lighter.

go to another optician, you need to try them on to ensure a good fit. They also asked me what I used at work to get the correct material for the lenses, in my case there is welding\ grinding and also solvents so a lens suitable for that was selected. (Plastic but I don't know what type?)

I have a pair. Got them from Asda opticians. My previous pair came from Specsavers. Both allowed me to try on several pairs first to decide what fitted best.

An optician that won't let you try glasses on doesn't want your business.

The other option is contact lenses then you can wear non prescription safety specs.
Daily disposable lenses are really cheap now so no need for solutions or cleaning.

yeah, it happens to us all at some stage. I just wear my std glasses under a full face visor, these protect you so much better anyhow and don't steam up so much as correctly fitted safety specs

I'd be taking my money elsewhere. if they tested your eyes you can ask for the prescription.

I ended up at glasses direct for my new 2 pairs though i did get 2 pairs with reactolights in them for 70.00 with different reactolights lenses in each frame

any glasses place that wont let you try there frames go elsewhere ive worn glasses all my life from 5 and have tried many pairs on from different shops

with safety glasses theres a pair that actually fit over your normal glasses what your looking for is the type that has bigger lenses in them and also the side coverings

these ones you need more squarer than the safety ones that fit to ones face

I will admit since i changed to these new ones ive caught more crap in them since the change than when i had bigger lenses and already have one pair that is scratched to hell due to grinder and pointing cement the glass ones held up much better than there plastic counter part

Aldi or Lidl when they have em in.,.£2.99 a pair,seen some in there last week....gave up going for prescription glasses because they would not let me have bi-focals ie I have to change between reading and distance specs,not only that the prescription glasses the optician has on offer is considerably far less than they're made and imported.

Where do you get decent full face visors from that will do replacement plastic.

just about any welding supplier, I have one with a burning lens in constant one with a clear, take them out and pop in another while I put them in the dishwasher. they might be one of them items that costs a lot to post so e-bay and mail order might not do them but they aint hard to get at all

Just remember that prescription safety glasses can only be made up to BS EN 166F - low energy impact, for medium impact (EN 166B) you need goggles or visor, and for high impact (EN 166A) you need visor or shield.

Safety specs are something you hope you never need but as I need prescription glasses for welding and reading I thought
I might as well get the safety version. Just as well I did.

I dropped a heavy item onto the bench which caught a piece of 12mm bar and flipped it up into my face, see-saw fashion.


They don't seem to be that easy to get hold of. For my first pair, the broken ones, I went to Specsavers but they only sold
the blinkers fitted to the arms of ordinary glasses. The manager said however that she used to work at Boots and that they
sold them. Spot on, they did indeed. However, after my little mishap I returned to get a replacement pair, to be told that
they didn't sell them anymore, only standard glasses with blinkers. I said that they were for twits in suits walking round
factories looking sooooo important, and not practical for actual workers. Big argument followed and I walked out.

The Wife & I now use a local independent optician for all our spectacle needs and that's where the pair on the right came from.
They will order half a dozen frames for me to try and I choose the ones I like, no problem.
