Primer thread 2.

Sorry lads, but every time i think i got the primer/paint process down in me head, i read a thread which changes things. So please bear with me. Ok.
Assume ive stripped my BGT back to the metal, washed, cleaned and dried it.

1. I need to get a coat of primer on fairly soon so it does,nt flash rust.
2. i prime with either etch or epoxy, this seems to be down to preference.
3. i notice some damaged panels and corrosion.
4. Weld repair as required grind finish & prime, (areosol will suffice.)
5 Repair dents damage etc.
6. Prep, fill, stop, & block finish all repaiirs.
7. Now prime with high build primer 2 poss 3 coats.
8. Apply mist guide coat.
9. Block sand final prep for base coats etc.
10. Thoroughly check for any small imperfections and rectify if any.

Right lads have i missed or messed anything.

Nope,youve got it all there,remember if your filling any dents,sand back the primer before you apply filler,then after youve shaped the repair,reprime the area.Any weld repairs needed,you can buy weld through primer in a spray tin and this can be applied on places where you wont get at after repair.Knifing putty/paste for any small defects ,deep prep scratches etc can be used onto of the primer coat,but only a micro thin layer.Dont leave it in primer too long either,or it will rust underneath.

I'm sure the epoxy primer is the way to go now over etch other than that looks like you got all the bases covered

Epoxy is just a better more modern primer than etch, you can also use filler after keying on top of epoxy, therefore each process is isolated from the previous and next. Can you see the advantages ???

yes, thanks guys, those couple of extra comments have helped as well , i can now move on to different paints etc , but thats for another thread.....

I thought the etch primer whent on first onto bare metal?

Its usually an acid based, chromate rich base coat that has good adhesion and anti-corrosion properties

it does, but most of the pro,s on the forum prefer epoxy based primers. rather than the etch, its taken me age to figure it all out, but i think im getting it slowly.
