Primmer wont hide bodyfiller why! Help please

I`m in the process of respraying my kit car which has a complete fibreglass body.
I`m using cellulose as i have used it once before.
I have run into quite a lot a problems whilst spraying the body.

1st There was a lot of cracks,and chips in the body which was sanded down then filled with body filler,flatted and smoothed down.

2nd prep`d the car for cellulose primmer filler(white as the car is going to be yellow) applied the primmer allover the car.

3rd . The white primmer is not hiding the colour of the body filler at all,i have wet and dried the car and achieved a flat finish but can see patches of different colors .

Why has this happened as the car was originally black and the white primmer has done its job of covering the black of the car but not the colour of the body filler.

Even though the car is smooth allover ,I`m scared to apply my yellow top coat as i fear that it may have patches from the body filler.


Help any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

how many coats of the primer have you applied?

sounds like you might need another couple to fully get rid of the colour differences. Try a slightly wetter coat than you have been applying although carfeul not to go too wet or you'll get runs

Use a yellow/cream primer filler before the white primer to give some thickness to it, you need a few good coats, then flat the primer filler and apply the white primer over the top.

the yellow/cream filler is better at covering colour differences than the white.

You can still see the contours of the filler because it has different absorbsion qualities than the body, therefore you need to put something a little more substantial between it and your primer.

put a coat of isolator over it,not too heavy or that will cause problems.then give it two good coats of white primer,maybe three. flat off with p600-p800. then you should be good too go.

i've had the same problem when fairing fiberglass boats before spraying,even with epoxy primers.after fairing i always spray a good coat of waxed gelcoat to seal fairing compound and fiberglass[also acts as moistre barrier in under water applications]then sand/prime as nessisary for top coat.i am useing epoxy high build primers and awlgrip mostly but also did dump truck hood that way.i've been a boatbuilder/glassman for twenty years.this is not cheep but is best for mirror finnish.

Thanks for the quick reply s, needed them as the weather is always changing,be winter soon.
I have caked on a lot of primmer soo.....
Going to opt for the yellow cream primmer then white and isolator ,fingers crossed should work.
Also thanks for the tip for the gelcoat. I can remember hearing about that ages ago,ashame i totally forgot
