Printer enclosure filtration

Thinking ahead (before I get my printer) I am looking at enclosures and particular aspects to make it work in my environment.

My printer is going to live in the same room as my computer and as such will be running whilst I am working in there. My aim is to make working kit rather than models and I believe the materials more suited to this will require an enclosure and potentially give off nasty fumes. I don't really have a way to ventilate out of the room.

So, if I build an enclosure, is there a way to filter the air to remove the nasty bits? I presume a carbon filter and possibly a heppa filter. I presume to maintain enclosure temperature a degree of recirculation would be required.

Any advice or links to guidance would be appreciated. I have tried doing a search but there are so many and many are venting to outside so it's proving difficult to locate one that suits what I want to achieve.

Also with this being a welding forum, it seems you folks are on a more similar wavelength to me as many on the Prusa forum want to mainly print models, desk tidies and chess sets!

You worry too much! I have the printer directly behind me, I have printed ABS, nylon and whatever with no more than a slight aroma with ABS.

I'm not sure I'd print ABS without an enclosure (temperature stability and stinky fumes), but PETG (which is what I use for pretty much everything and everything I print is functional rather than models) is odourless and doesn't need an enclosure.

Having said that, while my printer is right next to my desk, I generally don't print stuff while I'm working as the noise is a bit annoying. It isn't loud or anything, just a bit distracting when you're trying to focus. I'd guess an enclosure would help with that a bit.

For ABS, I believe the recommendation is to vent the enclosure with a fan and some ducting that goes outside.

I am getting a Prusa i3 mk3s. I won't get it until after Christmas so I have been watching the assembly on youtube to try and get prepared for it.

I will use the printer without the enclosure to start with, but when I borrowed a printer 2 or 3 years ago my good lady complained about the noise and the smell (when using ABS). That was with a prusa i3 mk2.5 and I believe the newer models are quieter.

If the printer is too noisy to have running overnight I will build an enclosure with acoustic properties (I used to work for a company doing acoustic enclosures etc) but that will also keep the heat in so will need some kind of ventilation.

Keeping the heat in is a GOOD thing, especially with materials prone to warping.

One thing the Prusa isn’t is noisy... i’ve never used it in stealth mode and I still can’t hear if from 10 feet away.
