Problem with new compressor??

Bought a new Draper 50L 230V 1.5kW compressor approx 2 months ago. Ive been slowly gathering a small collection of air tools, sprayguns, accessories etc. and started it up for the first time today.
Followed the manual for start-up instructions and using a 10 meter unwound extension lead powered it up. Pressure reached 1.5 - 2.0 bar (Should pressurise to 8.0 bar) and then the motor stalled followed by a humming noise and a bit of smoke and a strange burning smell coming from the motor.
I turned off the compressor and tried to turn it back on after a few mins with no joy, would not turn over and seemed completly dead. Tried to turn it on 45mins later connected directly to the socket and it powered up but the same thing happened as the initial start-up except there was more smoke coming from the motor followed by a huge spark from the motor.

Anyone have any idea's what would be wrong? or if i have done something wrong?

Sounds like insulation failure in the motor.

Whatever the problem is, it does now sound like the motor is completely banjaxed and will need replacement. (My initial thought stands though - the motor itself has probably failed - sounds like it is under warranty though?)

I can't see you've done ANYTHING wrong - I can't think of anything you can do wrong with these machines (other than, if it needs it, not fill it with oil, or play with the relief valve settings) that would kill it. It's of defective manufacture by the sound of things.

Best resist the temptation to try and fix it yourself - it's your suppliers problem to fix.

Thanks for the reply, yea it's under warrenty but it's going to be a lot of hassle sending it back for repair or replacement as im in N.Ireland. Had a feeling the motor packed up but just wanted to make sure there wasnt a quick fix or if it was something i done wrong or forgot to do etc.
