Project powered hacksaw

After a little tweaking it cuts beautifully square and most importantly to me nice and quietly all by itself..

The work clamp is temporary as I'm making a clamp which I can rotate for angles etc.. Making a robust one rather than use a cheap one which break far too often... Other than the phase three motor the blade and the bearings it's made from bits and pieces lying around in the main tig welded together and cut threads.. Hardest bit was keeping things level and symetrical, but we got there in the end... Muchly worth it too..

Do you think a little more weight on top of the blade arm would quicken the cut? I have seen similar machines with an adjustable weight on top. I think Myforboy made a one.

u have to be carefull when using thin blades with 2 much weight on top. they buckle also throw the saw well out of balance and it ends up out the shed nice simple design there

Yep I've actually a threaded hole for a piece of threaded rod in the top middle of the hacksaw already, was going to use it as need be really, got some heavy 3cm dia bar I've centre drilled and cut into slices so I can add and subtract as need be.. Forgot to put it on for the vid though...

Yep will do tonight when I get in from work... Although I'm not using the pully to drive it as such it's on there so I can quickly remove the linkage to it (one bolt) and use the motor on another project, just saves messing about with belts etc.. Works for me.. The first link is threaded so if I wish for a slightly larger or shorter stroke I can easily adj it.. Obv I occasionally add cutting fluid to the piece too.. The other night I left it cutting slices of 3 cm dia bar it took 10mins while I was doing other things.. When I use my metal chop saw the whole street knows about it, this little things so quiet.....

You can get 12"x1" power hacksaw blades (my Aminster saw uses them). Cheap enough on ebay.

How have you got the motor turning so slow?

It's a phase three 1 hp Brooks Crompton motor running off a Mitsubushi invertor, this invertor I share with my huge (6ft) pillar drill.. It allows me to use normal 240 volt electrics to run phase three equipment.. The invertor has a huge storage range of parameters and memory settings.. But in short I can just rotate a dial like a dimmer switch and slow it to an absolute crawl or wind it up to full speed.. Very handy..

No there's tons of power there.. Handy for using on other projects as and when req.. I got a very good cash price for it..
