Project welding bench! (yet another)

Hi,

Thought I'd share some pics of my first TIG welded project! I was determined to do this with my new TIG welder! lol....It was a bit of a long journey as everything had to be spotless, but I got there in the end even if a few of the welds have a little bit of contamination!.

First, me cutting the 50x50x25mm box section.

All cut and ready to clean.

My first TIG weld! Scary stuff, but didnt turn out so bad!

Finished!

I decided to stick weld 4 pieces of box section to the underside of the 10mm sheet and then drill some 10mm holes through the frame and the piecs on the sheet. Then I put some 10M bolts through the two pieces and bolted firmly on, just in case I need to take the top off at any point

Overall quite pleased!

Paul,
you may find that putting on some shoes that will take some big locking heavy duty castors on the feet/legs of the bench will stop it digging in your floor and it will help to slide when you want to move the bench away from the wall.

Yes, I thought about that. Are there castors with a brake available that have a 50x50mm plate on them?

Plenty of different types of castors on here that have a 50mm top plate.

Seriously ,
I had a set of four 60 mm hard plastic wheel ones with locks off eBay , the plate was slightly larger but I could not remove the wheel to weld the plate on so it was flash, cool, and flash till it was done ..no damage to the castor wheels.

Just google it and I'm sure you could find some suitable ones.

Very nice it is too, I have one question, in picture 7, where you welded all four sides of the joint did you get any distortion when it cooled? I have some plans for a trike project and they say only weld two sides, (it would be the two vertical welds on that joint) to avoid distortion.

Hi,

no, I didn't get any distortion. But I spot welded both ends of that middle support before I welded it on properly, which would have minimized distortion?
