As mentioned above, pressure wise they are fine. If you can find one from a company no longer in the business, like Shell, then legally it isn't an issue. But if re-painted who is going to know anyway ?!
Obviously care is needed to purge it of gas before use and a drain tap is needed.

thats because they have taken an initial payment for the bottles when u get one out . try getting your money back when u take it in 4 a refund though the inital rental probably covers the cost of the bottle to themTry getting any of those companies to collect their abandoned bottles though, and you'll soon see why so many are abandoned and used for other purposes. My whole collection of gas bottles exists because people just couldn't get shut of them any other way, and me being a hoarder...
