Propane Cylinder as Air Receiver ?

Has anybody used 47kg propane cylinders for extra compressed air storage?
Is it legal and safe to do so?

dont see why not,theyre rated at 20 bar pressure so should be ok

I have a 19kg I use as a carry around. The only issues is draining any water build up and lets not forget they are owned by a gas company

As mentioned above, pressure wise they are fine. If you can find one from a company no longer in the business, like Shell, then legally it isn't an issue. But if re-painted who is going to know anyway ?!
Obviously care is needed to purge it of gas before use and a drain tap is needed.
I've done a few myself.

I thought shell LPG were bought out by UGI corporation,

surely they transferred ownership of the bottles to them, and I have seen shell LPG vans passing

I thought it was Flowgas but if the bottles are old and unclaimed I doubt it would be an issue. I bet countless old Shell bottles have been scrapped anyway.

Apologies for hijacking this thread but whats the approx capacity in litres of air in a 19k bottle?I found an online convertor that said 1kg=1 litre but the 19k bottle looks similar in size to a 50litre comp tank.

Not sure what the exact volume is but they do look about 50L. LPG is sold by the KG of liquid gas that gasifies as its draw off

I reckon the volume of a 13 kg butane gas cylinder is about 26 litres, measured by filling one with water to purge it.

Try getting any of those companies to collect their abandoned bottles though, and you'll soon see why so many are abandoned and used for other purposes. My whole collection of gas bottles exists because people just couldn't get shut of them any other way, and me being a hoarder...

thats because they have taken an initial payment for the bottles when u get one out . try getting your money back when u take it in 4 a refund though the inital rental probably covers the cost of the bottle to them

It probably costs them more to test them than it does to make a new bottle

You can stack them verticly (upside down so they drain) as long as you have a corner or a steel coloum to attach/strap them to, no need to drill or weld

Piped together it gives nice big reserve for a small footprint.
