Propane regulator

My propane regulator which I bought off the 'Bay years back, along with a gas torch, has apparently turned up it's toes. It's a Sievert type 3084, in the 'then' equivalent of this kit. The regulator on its own is a bit spendy, would an ordinary reg [pancake style, beloved of caravaners and BBQ(ists) be OK?



Don't suppose anyone has one kicking about for beer tokens, although the red pancake ones are cheap enough.

go on ebay get an adjustable one there cheap enough or get a, hi lo burning regulator cheap enough

Thanks, lads. I'm now #confused.

I went to tidy away after starting the thread and discovered I can blow though the widget, the hose and the torch
I'll go back to square one tomorrow but is it possible that the bottle's about empty as @waddycall says. It's not something I use often and'd be surprised if it was on it's last legs gas-wise.

If it's that simple I'll be spending Sunday in the corner like this......

Be aware that if you purchase that one, you may have to chop the left hand BSP fitting off the end of the Sievert hose as that particular regulator only comes with a hose tail (and the people selling it do not know male from female).

Mr waddycall was making the point that camping propane regulators only output in the millibar range. For your torch, you need a higher pressure one so the camping type will not be suitable.

Sort of off topic John but how is the torch, I am undecided on either the Sievert Pro 86 cyclone or a Bullfinch 404. After my recent silver soldering failure I need something hotter, the Bullfinch claims to be hotter but the Sievent cyclone has a higher BTU so confused.

if you cant retain the heat round your job use soft grey breeseblocks broken up and pack them round and it retains the heat , i have sievert torches with varous size nozzles and u cant go wrong

You did open the valve on the bottle?

Sorry, can't help there, I'm afraid. I've only ever used to heat seized nuts etc, not very switched on 'temp scale' wise - it's done all I've ever asked of it [apart from now but that's probably down to me. ].

I have got one of those regulators if you do need a new one but first check the safety,
That's the black button on the end.
To reset it have the torch off, bottle on and push it in firmly

You can check if the bottle is empty by sticking it in a barrel of water.

Or just take it outside and crack the valve open and see if any gas comes out. It should be a loud rush not just a brief rush that declines within 2-3seconds

I'll have a go tomorrow, weather permitting. [forecast is rubbish....]. Gas does come out when I crack the bottle valve.

Should the button 'latch' in when I try that?

You can buy plugged propane regulators used for gas cutting fairly cheaply.

Are you aware that what you show in the photo is not a regulator at all but a hose failure device? With what you have, there is full bottle pressure to the torch and the button only pops out if the hose fails (and thus the flow rate is too high)?

The button should latch in, yes. Connect it all up, open the bottle and then press the button. You should then have gas at the torch. Sometimes the failure valves need a little pressure behind them to latch properly.

glad I know how a hose failure valve works, I was using one for 20 years and didnt know. as has been said, if your regulator is past it, you need a high pressure regulator. this is my original set up when I was using the sievert "bowling ball" 2kg gas bottles. thats a 2bar to 4 bar regulator.

these days I use a cheap high pressure regulator (think its 0.5 bar - 4bar) on a 6kg gas cylinder.

but on the other end on my torch I've used a quick release gas fitting

the fitting was modified from one of these fittings

Many thanks for your help and info, I had another go this morning and it looks like normal service has been resumed. From what you say the gas could be about to run out as the button doesn't latch in, but thinking about it, it's the first bottle and I've had it for years [as said, not a thing I use often]. Also, I'd completely forgotten lending it to a neighbour when he had a frozen pipe in mid-Winter and there's no telling how much gas that would have taken......

How often do we overlook the most obvious solution [well, I appear to ] - it's the old "when you hear the sound of hooves, don't think of zebras"

Exactly like me then, the valve came with the torch/hose combo and in my ignorance I just screwed it on the cylinder and off I went.....
