pump directon?

hello, just got another compressor, its got everything but a motor so will be adding another. does it matter what way the pump turns? you can change the direction of spin on the motor, does it make a difference to the pump what way it spins?

is 3mm mild steel strong enough to hold the motor in place, need to make some small mounts and this i all i have at the moment

There should be an arrow on the pump's flywheel/pulley. If there isn't an arrow the blades of the pulley may be angled to act as a fan, it should rotate such that air is blown over the pump cylinder.

It is important to get it right as the pump may have oil scoops on the big ends, or even a seperate oil pump.

there is no arrow on the pulley which i have seen, and there blades on the pullley are flat. i have another fan which is bolted to the motor. the con rods has little spokes, rods on the big ends to flick oil, but they go stright down and are not angled, and there is no seperate oil pump, the pump is the same as on another compressor i have which i have just rebuild with new piston rings etc

also not using 3mm steel for mounts, found some 6mm alloy sheet in the workshop that will be much beter

I'm sure I read somewhere that a drive belt should be installed so the the top of the belt is in tension when the motor is running, so the direction of rotation will depend on which side of the pump the motor sits.

Hopefully the motor and pump aren't vertically aligned!

looking at the front, the pump is on the right and the motor should be on the left. so if the motor went clockwise it will put tension on the bottom of the belt (since its pulling it round the pulley and the top of the belt leaving the motor would be loose as its getting pushed out the pulley to the pump pulley, make sence? correct

also, any tips how to line the motor up to the pump to the belt runs true? or just need to be done by sight? planning on a manual tensioner on the bottom of the belt as its the only place it can go

run a strait edge along the pulley on pump to the motor pulley and vice versa . it should run paralell with the belt and each pulley

If by front you mean the side the pullies are fitted, yes, so the motor should run anticlockwise (like my Clarke does).

I use the belt to align pump and pulley, just fit it with enough tension to stop it sagging and look directly down onto it, you can usually see any misalignment if it leaves the pullies at an angle. That way you are using the actual vees in the pullies, so any difference in external dimensions are irrelevant.

all the sides and the v on pulleys are machined at one setting unless its a cheap crap die cast picador one on the motor its irelevant which side the motor is on wether belt pulling at the top or the bottom of pulley .on the twin motor pump setup one is pulling from the top the other from the bottom but both are running anticlockwise .

So doing it my way will work on both good and bad pullies - that's good.

Setting it up with tension at the top was described in the instructions that came with a motor I bought, although I don't really see what difference it makes, it's probably just a convention.

using a strait edge is more acurate than sighting through by eye. a few degrees out on small pulley isnt noticable but wears the side of the vee out leading to premature failure. still as long as your happy with near enough . everyone to there own

Belts can tolerate misalignment to some extent, I've seen machines that actually use belts with a twist in them where shafts aren't parallel.

I've just checked my compressor and the pump pulley is much thicker on the outside of the vee than the motor pulley, there's no way a straight edge could be used to line them up.

its called clock the distance with a ruler ive had to set a few motors up on large woodworking machinery some of the pulleys are 4v using matched belts running at high speed on planers and large saws and the acuracy is quite critical not just near enough . as i said as long as your happy with your method il stick to mine next time u get your tracking checked ask how they do it with cars that have wider wheels at the back than the front

got the motor mounted today, turned out good

pic of the tensioner i have made up

the pulley walls are not the same, one is pulley is thicker than the other, and the pump pulley fins dont sit flush so i cannot use a square on them
i used 2 squares cable tied together, the small ones woodern handle is the same thickness as the pump pulley so i put the handle up agaist this and was able to get the two vee's to line up

i know the pulleys line up but cannot be sure of the angle on the motor pulley, may be a few degree out but looks spot on when looking down the belt from a far. can the belt take being slightly out, if it was?

Measured the distace between the pump head and the edge on te motor and was 1mm difference on each side so looks good, will look into it more tonight

That looks neat. At least you can adjust belt tension easily - it's an absolute pig on my Clarke.

You can also use a long rod placed in the pulley groves to line up, that is if you are lucky enough to have a long rod about your person.
