Put a camera inside my Air Tanks

As I am changing all fittings to PCL XF high flow- stuck my wi fi endoscope inside 2 of my air compressors.

First one - recent purchase of good used 2019 200L SIP:



I haven't drained it as I havent used it yet admittedly and it seems neither did the PO at any point! I will drain it ASAP and will drain it after I use it as best I remember.

This is another Mac Tools branded 100L one I have which is about 10 or 12 years old. Gets very little use and I drain it when I remember- about once a year

I suppose the takeaway is both tanks have a long life ahead of them but regular draining is important! The older tank here looks newer than the fresh one most likely due to the level of use and the draining frequency. There was standing water in both tanks

I’ve recently bought two used Clarke compressors, 2011 and 2016, when I pulled the drain plug on the newer one it was still dripping 24 hours later so obviously some rust build up inside partially blocking the drain valve, got a couple of litres out of it.
Think I’ll do the same to see what horrors lurk within.

More so if you use plasma or paint things.

It’s better for your air tools as well.

I had spotted this tandem compressor on Gumtree recently. Good price I would have bought it only for the condition of it!

If the outside looks like that you can only imagine the innards! Knackered.

For a DIYr probably not worth it. Aka my compressor runs once a month if even.

For any pro / regular user absolutely yes.

We had one with an electronic timer on at work, the control board failed after a few years service so my boss bought a new one and gave it me to fit, new one looked identical to the old one so I swapped them, switched on and there was a "pop" and the magic smoke escaped. I then compared them closely, the old one was 240V AC and the new one 24V DC oops, boss had to order another (correct) one.

Until they go wrong , mine did and drained 3ltrs of water out of my big tank thats the only issue with them. Fitted a ball valve for the minute

need to build a water separator and fit between compressor and tanks (3)

well there will be makes no odds if its being used it will vary

I've got an auto drain fitted... I think it works havn;t checked it in years

there was someone on here (can;t remember who) wired his up to the live feed to the motor so every time the motor started it up it opened the drain valve for a second... seams like a good idea, saves it slowly dumping all your stored air while the compressor isn't in use

Looks like it came from an autobody shop.
Note intake filters are small, and not remoted outside either.
It probably breathed in tons of filler dust and paint.

Nope.

It came from a domestic garage of a guy who did furniture at home. He was retired but had health problems and quit.

This is where it came from his domestic garage. He bought it new locally in 2020




I got it for £300 cash - hard to beat that deal since they are £800 ish new.

It's like new externally also

That's a complete unknown. I once bought some tanks which had been sat in a filthy, damp, workshop (where they sometimes used acids) for a couple of years and were pretty disgusting on the outside. On inspection, the insides were like new. That said, £300 would have been a bit of a gamble - did you see whether or not it sold? That could be either the best £300 somebody ever spent...or the worst.

Has anyone every sprayed the inside of a compressor tank with the sorts of corrosion prevention stuff normally used for inaccessible spaces in cars and vans?

i bought a twin setup for 70 quid the only thing wrong was it wanted the contactors and timer rewiring and 1 new, motor fitting and ive been running it for years . that scruffy one was well worth 300 quid if it produced air

It was sold within 48 hrs or so.

I was relieved it sold before I got to think about it too much!

The wiring looked a little messed up on it too. But I'm sure it could have been cleaned up and used. I have enough restoration projects as is! If I see one similar in the future I would buy it right now I really don't have space for it either.

It is strange they leave these tanks bare steel finish inside. They could dunk and prime the whole tank you would think but it saves a few £ not doing that and maybe they take it as a serviceable life item not meant to last 50+ years.

Ross, I think he was at cross-purposes with the previous post. Note mention of filters. He completely ignored the carp one, which was being described, and inserted the one he actually bought.
