I have been watching documentary about the new aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth
A local guy said it was made in sections then joined together
How much of the joining together was robot welded and how much manual
Some might think it silly question

I doubt any of it was robot.

The verticals could of been done with a tractor travelling on a rail, running metal core/flux core wire with operator constantly monitoring and adjusting settings.

Down hand deckwelds would have been tractor but subarc rather than FCAW.

Inner skin/stiffeners/bulkheads etc would of all been hand welded.

Glad to be out of that place. It’ll all be hand welded, not many robots other than the sub arc bugs

My neighbour is a welder in a shipyard. They only do repairs these days, he's a grafter but he tells me it's a thankless job

He did some nights recently, looked rough the whole time

Not many of those places left in Yorkshire!

He has been there since leaving school. The nights were because they were just that busy. Hopefully they will be around for a long time

Welding in a ship yard is a pretty grotty job, especially in ship repair. Too much time in dark damp dirty tanks and things

Couldn't tell you to be honest and BAE won't either probably.

You mean the actual skin of the hull or the ribs/frames? The hull is nowhere near that thick, I’d guess at 1/2” maximum, maybe even less? They are not like battleships from years ago where they are armour plated.

Biggest ship I've ever worked on was about 120m long, 8000 tons, the hull on that was less than 10mm if I remember, probably more like 8. A supply boat nudged us with a pointy bit once and popped a hole in it very easily. Luckily above the waterline.

when I worked on the hermes one of the officers told me ,pre fauklands, that he would rather be on that than any other ship as it was the only one in the navy that was armoured and a excocet would bounce off it ,his words. six months later...

You get to sign a really nice, thick document that gives all sorts of horrible results if you mention things like that. Of course I don’t doubt anyone who might be interested in that sort of thing already knows the answers

Some of the Calmac vessels have been held back in dry dock to repair plate thinning. I wonder if that's a euphemism for 'There shouldn't be a hole there.'

I seem to remember reading that there were some warships made in the UK at one time (perhaps even based on a Royal Navy pattern) for a foreign navy where they paid extra to have the weld distortion removed as they valued the aesthetics.
