Racking for wood & stuff.

Need to build some racking with head height clearance underneath to store some timber. Stack of timber is 3m long by 400mm wide, weight around 300kg.

I'd like to just have supports at each end with cross members- the whole thing like a ladder on four legs! I'm thinking to use box for the longitudinals- but what size to avoid my timber ending up as expensive bananas??? I'm short of space so avoiding any mid point supports would be favourite.

Can you get any support from roof timbers?

Not really- it's on a concrete terrace of a wooden shed which doesn't have a roof structure which would offer much support. It's a great roof for protection from rain and sun though, hence a good site for timber storage.

Id go for a space frame - two 30mm shs box lengths in parallel with a 4?in gap and some 4" long 25mm shs noggins on 4" centres.

Either that, or source some pallet rack beams?

I should use 40 mm shs with 4 mm wall thickness for this application
Welds need to be good and forces carried into the floor

I should do this with vertical legs carrying the load into the floor and tied to the walls with fixings

The arms as as such I should angle up from 90 as much as practical

That's great advice, thanks- I can make good fixings to the wall frame structure, and everything at 90 with some diagonals on the corners which aren't secured to the wall.

I've had another look and I can derive some mid point support from the roof structure, like most things I make the wooden shed was a touch over engineered....
