Yep, the rod side has less area so is weaker.

Not often, always. Simple maths. Same flow from the pump, spread over smaller area= less mechanical advantage and quicker action. You can calculate it if you really want to!

The force on the push is the piston area x pressure where as the pull stroke is (piston area - shaft CSA) x pressure.

Depends on the type of ram as well. A double ended will be the equal.
