raspberry pi / linux / audio / question

I'm asking on here, because I honestly don't know where else to ask...

I have a linux server which hosts audiobook files (using Audiobookshelf in a docker container)
I have a (headless) raspberry pi which is connected to my hi-fi.

I want to stream audio from the server to the Pi, and control it using the Audiobookshelf web interface (on a third computer/my phone.

The audio always plays through the web interface, instead of via the raspPi's headphone socket - ideally I'd like a choice of which output to use, although I can probably find a workaround for that once I know how to output via the Pi

The Pi is too low powered to host Audiobookshelf (given I have over 300 audiobooks on it, plus a couple of hundred radioplays), and even if it wasn't - it still won't play them locally, only through the browser interface


Can anyone either tell me how to do it? Or at least suggest a forum/tutorial or even a youTube channel that might help?

Oh wait - do you mean you want it to play through the pi's audio? In which case you want the pi to be a media player and the linux machine is just a file server.

The pi is just what I have, in terms of a network-controllable player with an audio output.

The link you've given is more to make the Pi a "firestick" type TV box - I don't need anything that complicated (do I?)

I tried:

firefox running in a container on the Pi, which was then connected to the linux server web interface. The idea being that I could then output the docker audio via the Pi.
I used my phone to connect to the webserver which was serving firefox, but
it was VERY patchy because of the lack of computing power on the Pi, and even then, I still got the audio output through my phone, instead of the Pi.


What I need is basically an audio only headless web browser running on the Pi, which I can remotely access via a standard browser on my phone.
(it has to be a web browser, because the audioook server is only controllable that way)

I just c+p'd the above into google, and it tled me to this:

NOTE/UPDATE: After an update this kind of stopped working and I struggled with it a lot. Now I actually recommend using snapcast instead of this solution. It works better! I moved to a new place and it has more than one room. Naturally, I hooked up the stereo in the living room and tested it...

Pulseaudio is the new Audi subsystem, replacing alsa that replaced the other one

You could force it through the boot.config however pulseaudio is probably the best answer

I used to use Jack for audio but it seems Pulseaudio combines the best of the the other systems
