My cooker keeps tripping at the consumer unit. It does this without turning any oven or grill on. It's done it before but usually you just flick the rcbo back on and it works fine, but now nothing won't latch up atall. If I turn the isolator off behind the oven then it will go up. Turn the isolator on and it goes. My assumption is that this is cooker end. Before I tear the cooker apart,do the rcbo's go bad, I'm guessing not the case as switching the isolator off allows the rcbo to turn on.

Could be the cooker end, to answer your question directly, a faulty RCBO could be a possibility.

Could be the element, I've had a couple go over the years, they are fairly easy to test and replace.
Our dishwasher did it a couple of weeks ago but luckily for me my brother in law fixes domestic appliances for a living, it was the element.

Will an element still trip even with all the switches off?
I presumed that it would have to be a wiring issue somewhere before the switch ?

yes if the cooker controll is switched on and nothing being used on the cooker the neutral is still connected so any of the circuits down to earth will still trip. insulation test is needed and part the cables to the elements
This is where we got to. It was behaving exactly like yours even after I'd changed one failed element. I assumed a wiring fault too. It was an old oven, not worth throwing more parts at in my case. I imagine it was an insulation test that revealed it was the oven, my friend definitely tested it for us.
