Rebuild/repair engine crane

Rather a huge one! I bought it cheap years ago - apparently will lift 6 tons. But it gushes oil everywhere. The people I had it from used old engine oil by the look of it! Nasty thick black stuff.

I would like to restore it. I assume it is a case of taking all the hydraulics apart and replace seals etc? Anyone done anything like this?

And yes that is my lovely little used Colchester Triumph.

There was a transit tipper ram and pump on here the other day,
Would have been awesome with a electric hydraulic engine crane,

The pump will also probably need new seals.

Condition of the polished part of the ram is critical....rusty and pitted isnt what you want.

The part I can see looks fine so hopefully will be ok.
The trailer I am building is perfect for carrying lathes and milling machines - it would be so much easier to load them with this!

Thats a big'un! Generally* the rod (polished part) you see doesn't matter on an engine crane. It is single acting, pushing from underneath the piston.
* By generally, I mean that the seal has to keep dirt and water out, so if waters got in, it can rust the ram bore, causing the oil to come out the rod seal.

That is what worries me - oil comes out all over the place. It does still lift but haven't tried anything very heavy. Ahh well I will give it a go - worse case I could get a ram off something else - it needs to be pretty huge though! Big diameter on it.

Ahh but that is close in - a lot less on full reach. Then again I would just reverse the trailer under it.

Bridgeports are very feeble - my Elliot Sturdimill is close to 4 tons! That huge HIAB lorry didn't exactly struggle with it but even the driver was very suprised when he offload the mill and the outriggers were 1 foot in the air when the weight came off!
