Recommend a quality regulator...?

Decided on the Wolf Dakota 90, just purchased and expecting delivery mid week.

According to various comments the fitted regulator is not up to the job.

I'm keen to begin using the compressor for bodywork and would like it to perform as it should.

Can anyone recommend a good quality regulator that is durable and performs well?

no but you may want to get a complete set with reg and 3 stage filter

I was under the impression that the filters/traps should be closer to the spray gun than nearer the compressor?

That said, I will buy a moisture and oil filter as well.

or leave it fitted and just remove the blank in the front of the compressor and run that to another better regulator

take the bung out the end and run your own pipe work or air line from that, much better flowi use a regulator and then a water trap, both right near my outlet, 1/2 bore minimum, got them from ebay

There is the possibility that I may use an air chisel, D.A. etc. in the future. With that in mind I think it'd be best to ditch the fitted regulator and replace with another item just in case

I am not 100% but a lot of regs on this type are all part of one casting built into the pressure switch, so are not removable.(they are also the weak point so wouldn't want to hang a bigger reg off of the cast switch)
As above the best option is to remove the plug from the end of the tank and take your air from this point.

and to get the most out of the regulator you choose, dont forget to use 10mm bore air hoses as a minimum and euro style (pcl xf) fittings as they are less restrictive than standard fittings.

Got to asky Pondy, don't the compressor get really hot like that. Mine gets very warm to point of smelling after around 40 mins on 10 min off.
Got my second old compressor tank plumbed same way then out put from that to regulator trap etc and spurs using 15mm copper, works well if no leaks.

it gets hot but never enough to cause issues, noise is an issue so make the enclosure, has a fan at back pushing air in and 4 small fans at top pulling warm air out, my usage doesn't see it running for long periods, a few mins constantly running every 10 mins maybe, runs a plasma and mainly a Mac die grinder which uses very little air, i have a temperature gauge and never goes over 30 after a long run, i dont have moisture issues either, i can run the door open slightly which lets the heat out but still keeps noise bearable

the wolf dakota 90 compressors have a thermal switch on the side of the black box above the motor (not sure what temperature it kicks in at though)

The compressor has arrived now and on examining it, as you say leaving it in place is probably the better idea. Thanks for the info
