Recommend air compressor for painting

Hi all,

I am looking at air compressor today Santi didn't bring me one!
So I don't know much about air compressor, I just know it is handy to have ;-)

I am starting to restore car as a hobby, and the one I have at the moment need welding and painting ;-)
I will need to start a project's thread, the car just get into the workshop last weekend apparently I needed to free the driveway.

So I have a idea in term of welding machine and all, thanks a lot for the weldequip shop (brilliant idea)

So I need to find a air compressor which will allow me to respray a car.
For the budget, I can probably go up to €300.

So what will you advice me, I have seen 3 on second hand on some irish web site. But they are probably sold. ;-(

I have seen a 200L , 250L, and 100L, but maybe a 50L will be enough I have actually no idea

What do you think?

Put your money into cfm rather than tank size. What sort of spraygun do you anticipate using? HVLP (High volume, low pressure) need more air than a conventional one.

I have no idea what CFM is? and about the spray gun no clue as I never spray car in my live.
Which one is better or easier?

I have a feeling it is really time start reading the thread.

I'd pay close attention to the rated wattage of the motors,because they seem to be taking liberties with the KW to Horsepower figures lately.
When I bought my compressor it was described as 2HP/2200watts,but I've noticed that compressors of the same wattage are now routinely described as 3HP.

1.50 kw= 2 hp . 2.50kw= 3hp if u can aford it get a 14cfm compressor with a 3hp motor better to have more air than less

i think thats a direct drive trouble with them when the motor goes it cant be fixed better off with a belt drive

im of the same opinion myself belt drive
is best but its all down to cost and what can be aforded

I have seen a couple of compressor more less close to home, so I will give few phone call tomorrow just in case something is not sold yet and could do what I need.

So the main thing is the 14CFM and 3hp and a driver belt.

Any other advice?

thats the best to go for if u can get one .will last for years and u can run airtools off it if needed .and has a good resale price if sold on .hope u get sorted

The choice of compressor has a number of questions to be considered. What type?.... vane, piston, or screw. How much noise will it make considering the Cubic Feet of Air delivered? Piston compressors are noisy. Will the new compressor plug into your mains supply and run? A 14cfm/3hp may need a larger seperate supply from the consumer fuse board to the compressor socket. Do i need a filter/lubricator? What tools do you intend to run off the air provided? If you only intend to run a spray gun then choose the spray gun and match the CFM needed for the spray gun with choice of compressor. ABOVE ALL TAKE YOUR TIME TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COMPRESSOR.

The compressor i have is a 14cfm/3hp HYDROVANE and needed a seperate mains supply.

Depending on yr budget, go for hp/cfm over capacity if forced to choose. You can add more air capacity later - extra tank, e.g dead compressor bought cheap just for it's air tank etc.

Spray guns, match the gun to the actual delivered cfm of the comp (it's FAD, not it's displacement cfm). This usually means 'conventional' guns not HVLP (high vol low pressure) - these need lots of air. Although, the bay of flea has a fair few guns claiming to be HVLP which ain't... always check the specs.

As above, the startup spike might well mean you need to sort out a supply for it.
