Record bench vice No6

Hi. Don't ask but I managed to break my record No6 bench vice. I'm on the look out for a replacement. I have looked at some on evil bay but a record No6 used one are quite expensive.
Anyhow the irwin record number 6 are reasonably priced. Is the brand irwin vice any good ??

Irwin took over Record and moved production to China.
The quality of the vices is not what it used to be, hence why the older Record stuff commands such a premium.
I think they are probably OK, but nothing special - you can likely pick up equally good Chinese ones for less money.

You could keep an eye open for some other old British makes - Woden, Parkinson etc - might be worth having a look at the "show us your vice" thread for some inspiration for ebay searches.

There are some good quality vices being manufactured, but they are going to be a lot more dosh than an old Record.

What bit did you break? Perhaps it is repairable.

My way of identifying a good vice to see if it has this mark.

If that's printed on it then it's good. That's my record No 4, I could have bought a new similar size vice off Ebay for a good bit less than what I gave for that but my experience has been that if you want a vice that will last buy an older made in England one.

I just sold my Record 6 for £85, with jaw selection...

I would agree that a good old 2nd hand one is the way to go, e.g. a Parkinson No8 J with QR is better overall than the Record 6 IMHO

Yeah never that price when you want one. The No5 on e Bay are £90 + and know where within a 100 miles .

I've got one of the Eclipse EMV6 vices, gets a fair bit of use in a vehicle workshop, never had to put scaff tube over the handle though so possibly never *really* tested.... Had it four years now and it's been fine, It was £74 delivered, not from fleabay though.

That's mine but I do also have a record no 5 rusting outside which I could clean up and do cheap. Postage is only a tenner with parcelforce. @vw1 pm me if you're interested.

Thank you for help. It does need to be record No6 as I'm limited on space. I'm greatfull for all the help and advice.

Ebay is the wrong place to look, everything is overpriced. Gumtree, buy & sell & Facebook marketplace would be a better bet.

Or stick up a post in the wanted section of the forum, might yield some results!
