I'm thinking of cleaning up and re-painting my old Record vice so does anyone know what the nearest equivalent is to the blue paint used on record vices and tools?
I am sure I have read somewhere where you can Send a sample colour from a picture etc to a paint shop and they should be able to scan and match it? I can't remember where I read it though, maybe one of the below? I know B&Q can do a colour match but only with household paints I think?
Thanks W4yne, but I wouldn't be using auto paints. Wouldn't last 5 minutes on a vice!
I was going to use Rustoleum combicolor or an equivalent industrial paint. These all use RAL or BS codes, something like RAL5010 or RAL 5002, can't decide which is the closer match.
It was originally Stokes' enamel in Record Blue I think I read somewhere but it has changed colour a few times and any dark blue enamel would do the job if it looks close. Hammerite smooth blue looks a good match.
Cheers pedrobedro. I did consider Hammerite smooth blue, it's not far-off, but I lost a lot of love for Hammerite after they removed the nasty stuff from it
'Record Blue' is actually a British Standard colour (BS110, I believe). It was also known as Roundel Blue around WWII time, as that was the colour of the blue in the RAF roundel. Stokes Paint in Sheffield certainly do sell it, as I bought some from them about a month ago for just the same purpose. I also got some Zinc metal primer from Stokes, as it's the recommended first coat.
If you want to do a proper job, I'd get the vice blasted first to get rid of all the old paint and give a good 'key' for the paint. Roger (rtbcomp) did mine for me, but then I only live a mile or so away from his place.
