Last week I bought a little Record No. 2 with the intention to sell it on quickly and make a profit. Unfortunately it did not sell, but someone contacted me after the auction saying they'd take it for $10 under my reserve, which frankly ****** me off a little bit so I've decided to keep it, and fully restore it (semi out of spite!). I'll find somewhere to put it!
This is it as bought:
A lot of paint left, one jaw missing and a chunk off the front jaw. I honestly don't know how you would do that sort of damage. Underneath there are signs of over-tightening, a seriously trashed cotter pin, a bent washer and loads of grease which I've cleaned out. I've restored a Record 34P before and that was very simple to take apart, unlike the No. 2 which had a pin, cotter pin and dovetail to remove before everything would come apart. I'll post pictures of re-assembly to guide anyone else through.
The machined surfaces have responded well to a little sanding and brushing. Hammerite is on to prevent flash rusting:
More to come
