reducing warping from welding

Im welding a bit of 10mm mild steel and chanal its tacked up nice and square and before i go and pump a load of heat into it i was wondering if there are any tricks to stop it from warping to mutch.
i gess keep it cool with wet rags or clap it up?

1. Weld across the flanges of the channel first, each face, both sides.
2. Weld channel web, outside face first (i.e face touching the bench).
3. Weld both sides of stiffener to plate, outside face first.
4. Weld both sides of stiffener to channel (Leave this till last)

Needs some more tacks on before you weld it.

Done right it won't distort too much...nothing that the bolts won't pull back anyway No need to fiddle about with damp rags. Clamping won't help much on a job like that.

Oh, and if you're welding and hear a tack break. Stop. Don't do what a lot of people do and keep going.

I'd only worry about clamping stuff when there's a lot of welding on it like these frames i did recently. All the vertical beams/angles were free ends so would end up like a banana if not clamped. Bad design really.

looks ok just need to let it cool of then i can reassemble it with the liner bearing and check it

the base plate has gone a little bit but if its an issue i can shim it below the slide.

Setting things up out of square is the best way, plus reducing your heat input, general design of the part.

You wouldn't believe how much a UB will distort with just a few welds down it's spine.

Setting stuff off square is ok if you've done that job loads of time and you can repeat it bang on otherwise it can be a total f### up. You've got to predict just how much you expect it to pull and off set it by that amount which is no easy task as a one off. Travel a bit on the slow side and it may pull too much or too quick and it doesn't pull back either way you've just fully welded it on the p#ss.
I'm not good enough at predicting these things so I always set it true, clamp it best I can and tack/weld it in a sequence to try and maintain its position.

setting up off square has never worked for me, even when tacking up it never pulls square for me. i clamp it up square now, weld it up and leave it clamped until its cool

I've done a good amount of frames and steel work that has required preset/pre-stress and setting out of square, all MIG, as you say Richard first time is a bit of a guess but with time you get an idea of how much you need.

Yeah I know guys that off set there work and it pulls in ni on straight every time. I on the other hand have tried it a few times with very little success rate. Thing is I'm never welding anything in big batches. I don't do much gmaw nowadays either so I'm well out of practice when compared to guys doing it all day.

Oh yeah its all down to time spent doing it and repetion if you asked me to do it in TIG like you say I wouldn't have a clue how much heat input it would need to move it.
