Refilling a gas bottle from a compressor

Hi everyone
I currently run a 180db compressed air train horn on my LT35 van from a pub size bottle of Co2 sadly (for me) it ran out today while saying hi to a mate, i got given 3 bottles a couple of years ago and they have all now ran out soo i was wondering what would happen if i refilled them from my compressor, they dont need C02 it was just handy. I`m guessing that the pressure would not be as high as a proper refill anyone got any ideas?

just fill it with compressed air it wont last long mind

I don't have an answer for your question, but this guy --> http://www.hornstaruk.co.uk/ <--- is a member on the L200 forum that I'm on and he imports and sells kits and parts for train horns. He uses compressors on his, rather than pre-filled bottles - might be worth seeing if he sells something that you could plumb in permanently?

Not sure your compressor will get enough pressure. 10bar max maybe. Dependant on size if cylinder few seconds to maybe a minute

Cheers skotl i was thinking about a putting a compressor on the van somehow, at the time i got them it was easier to use the gas bottles. may have to look down that route!

Just check the test rating in the cylinder neck. Not sure what co2 cylinders are rated at

You can get onboard compressor kits usually fitted on off-roaders for diff lockers/tyre inflators.

180 dB is insanely loud, anyone nearby will have instantly ruptured ear drums.

5 Glock 9mm pistols all being discharged at the same time at an indoor range only produce about 130 dB and that will rupture your ear drums without protection

People aren't taught much about actual driving now when training to take the test, and it can take a while for some things to then filter through....!

How about a Scuba dving cylinder. Cost around a fiver to fill a 15L size to 232Bar at most Dive shops. Just need a 1st Stage Diving Reg to drop the pressure down to 10Bar ( can be adjusted to go lower). The only downside is they need to be tested every 2 1/2 Years, or you can't get them re-filled (unless you've got a H.P. compessor)

No, they only need testing every five years if for surface (non breathing) use.

2.5 yearly inspection is only a visual check on the inside

If you get down to Gloucestershire, I have got an out of test diving cylinder & an old regulator if you want it. There is no pillar valve in the cylinder, but it would be easy to get one. The cylinder is by modern standards on the small size for diving. I can't say if it would pass test or not, but you are welcome to it if you want it as I keep meaning to weigh it in. I didnt want to pass it on for diving use as it's slightly lower pressure than newer cylinders & if mixed up with a load of tanks in the filling station could be overfilled. As long as you are aware there would be no problem.

From memory the tank is 185 bar, & holds 60 cu. ft
